From The Courier Journal?..
Let?s chat about those seminal moments in life when something clicks in your head. A decision gets made, a new philosophy entrenched, and then, there?s simply no going back.
Yes, I?m talking here about the moment that one chooses to be healthy.
A sad truth: When obesity gets mentioned in the health and fitness press, the news is usually negative. You hear about the dangers of fatness?diabetes, heart disease and joint problems to name just a few. Even more negative are reports on its abysmal treatments, like invasive stomach-stapling surgery or diet pills laced with anti-seizure drugs and amphetamines. The most pessimistic stories, however, are those that dip into the notion of personal responsibility and liken obesity to a human weakness or even a sin.
On obesity, it?s negative nearly all the time. That?s no way to tackle a problem.
Getting to solutions means celebrating and promoting successful case reports. We can learn a lot when things go right. Heart doctors can tell you about these rare patients: They?ll use action verbs like: ?he transformed himself?she saved her life by losing that weight? He bought into the program? He exercised his way to health.? All doctors have seen the amazing results of the ?click.? Something switches a patient on, and when it does, obesity has no chance.
We must be curious enough to wonder what caused these folks to flip. For it is these deeply personal Eureka moments that lead to true wellness.
I?ve got a great success story to share with you. This one is especially beautiful because it involves my quirky hobby, cyclocross.
His name is Earnest Gagnon and he once weighed more than 570 pounds. Depressed and embarrassed, Mr Gagnon mostly stayed at home. Then one day something flipped in him and he called a friend and asked to go for a ride. That was in 2010?and 330 pounds ago.
This week, NPR reports that Mr. Gagnon was seen in a cyclocross race. That?s pretty amazing because racing ?cross? is a much tougher proposition than riding on a smooth road. (Try pedaling a bike on grass. There is no coasting.)
Though Mr. Gagnon finished last in his race, he?s surely not losing. He has gained so much: better health, self-esteem and mostly, a confidence in his own ability to help himself.
