Why the bird brain is actually a dinosaur brain

A team of scientists has found that the enlarged brain once believed unique to birds actually predates the bird, complicating the bird's already murky evolutionary trajectory.

By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / July 31, 2013

A new paper published in Nature suggests that Archaeopteryx's flight-ready brain case was not unique but was found in non-avian dinosaurs, a find suggesting that the bird brain was actually received from the dinosaurs.

It?s a well-known tenet of paleontology: Those dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets are actually dinosaur-shaped dinosaurs. That is to say,?birds are dinosaurs.?

Not just descended from dinosaurs. Birds genuinely are?dinosaurs, since modern biology classifies any organism as belonging to the group from which it descended.

But pinpointing the moment at which some dinosaurs evolved into birds, and identifying the unique features that actually distinguish between the two, has been a vexing problem in paleontology.

And it has just become more difficult.?New research published in Nature suggests that one of the features once thought to be the exclusive domain of birds, the enlarged skull found in Archaeopteryx ? often called the "first bird" ??was in fact present in several other non-avian dinosaurs. That pushes back the evolution of the bird's complex, flight-supporting brain: non-avian dinosaurs, it seems, had similar brains and might have also been capable of flight.

In other words, the bird brain might just be a dinosaur brain.

?The flight-ready brain of Archaeopteryx does not represent a unique adaptation of birds for flight, but rather had evolved much earlier and was inherited by birds from their dinosaurian relatives,? says Gaberiel Bever, an assistant professor of anatomy at the New York Institute of Technology.??The large brain of birds predates birds themselves.?

The drama of bird evolution has for years turned on Archaeopteryx, an animal from the late Jurassic period some 150 million years ago. First discovered in 1861 in southern Germany, Archaeopteryx was initially considered a transitional fossil: its German name, Urvogel, means ?first bird,? putting it squarely at that amorphous turning point when some dinosaurs became birds.

But over the last few years, the animal has been regularly un-pended from and then returned to its central evolutionary spot:?Several studies have dismissed the animal from the avian tree altogether. Other studies have swept it back up into the tree again.

One data point in the debate has been Archaeopteryx?s brain. Birds are special among living reptiles for their enlarged brain case relative to their total body size. That disproportionate cranial size is critical to flight, which requires a complex nervous system. And Archaeopteryx?s brain, while a long way from the more evolved ones of modern birds, has long been known to be large enough to have supported flight.

But a team of scientists has now found that the Archaeopteryx?s flight-ready skull size is not unique among its relatives. CT scan data comparing Archaeopteryx?s brain size to those of about 20 living birds and 10 non-avian dinosaurs show that Archaeopteryx?s skull size is actually smaller than some of the closely related dinosaur skulls to which it was compared.

India's economic crisis: No daylight yet

Given the Reserve Bank of India?s recent credit squeeze and the likelihood of rising inflation due to the weaker rupee, the environment will be more challenging in the second quarter of 2013-14.

Until last Saturday, 399 listed companies from across manufacturing, as well as banking and finance, reported results for the first quarter of this financial year (2013-14).

The numbers suggest that India Inc is still struggling for growth momentum and may, in fact, have lost some ground.

The total operating income of the sample was Rs 3.88 lakh crore (Rs 3.88 trillion).

Sales have grown by four per cent over April-June 2012, while profit after tax has grown by five per cent -- the lowest growth rates in the past five quarters.

Allowing for wholesale inflation, which ran at just below five per cent, the results indicate stagnation.

This impression is reinforced by operating profits (profit before depreciation, interest and tax), which have grown at 7.7 per cent for the whole sample, and at 4.6 per cent for non-financial enterprises -- again, the lowest growth in the last five quarters.

Abbas wants 'not a single Israeli' in future Palestinian state

By Noah Browning

CAIRO (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas laid out his vision on Monday for the final status of Israeli-Palestinian relations ahead of peace talks due to resume in Washington for the first time in nearly three years.

Abbas said that no Israeli settlers or border forces could remain in a future Palestinian state and that Palestinians deem illegal all Jewish settlement building within the land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.

The forceful statements appeared to challenge mediator U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's hopes that the terms of the talks, scheduled to begin Monday night over dinner, be kept secret.

"In a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli - civilian or soldier - on our lands," Abbas said in a briefing to mostly Egyptian journalists.

"An international, multinational presence like in Sinai, Lebanon and Syria - we are with that," he said, referring to United Nations peacekeeping operations in those places.

He was in Cairo to meet with Egypt's interim president, Adli Mansour, nearly a month after the country's armed forces ousted his elected predecessor, Mohamed Mursi. He also discussed with senior Egyptian intelligence figures relations between the two governments and the easing of movement of goods and people between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

Israel has previously said it wants to maintain a military presence in the occupied West Bank at the border with Jordan to prevent any influx of weapons that could be used against it.

But Abbas said he stood by understandings he said he reached with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, predecessor to more right-wing leader Benjamin Netanyahu, that NATO forces could deploy there "as a security guarantee to us and them."

The United States is seeking to broker an agreement on a two-state solution in which Israel would exist peacefully alongside a new Palestinian state created in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, lands occupied by the Israelis since a 1967 war.

The talks will be conducted by senior aides to Netanyahu - Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Yitzhak Molcho - and to Abbas - represented by Saeb Erekat and Mohammed Ishtyeh.

On the future of Jewish settlements on the West Bank and the status of Jerusalem - among the most contentious issues facing the two sides - Abbas signaled no softening of his stance.

"We've already made all the necessary concessions," he said.

"East Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Palestine ... if there were and must be some kind of small exchange (of land) equal in size and value, we are ready to discuss this - no more, no less," he said.

TERMS OF REFERENCE

Before agreeing to return to talks last week, Palestinian officials were adamant that negotiations should have three main prerequisites: the release of veteran Arab prisoners in Israeli jails, a full settlement freeze and an acknowledgment of the 1967 lines as the basis for future borders.

Israel has publicly granted only one of those demands when its Cabinet on Sunday voted by a slim margin to approve the phased release of 104 Arab prisoners.

Abbas said on Monday that he refused to endorse any half-measure whereby he would let Israel freeze construction in smaller, more far-flung settlements but allow it to build in the larger and more populous "blocs" closer to the 1967 lines.

"There was a request, 'We'll only build here, what do you think?' If I agreed, I would legitimize all the rest (of the settlements). I said no. I said out loud and in writing that, to us, settlements in their entirety are illegitimate."

Asked if the Americans may try to get Israel to agree to a de facto settlement freeze, the president made a broad smile and declined to answer: "I don't know."

Palestinian sources say officials remain uncomfortable with the lack of a firm Israeli commitment, publicly or behind closed doors, to meet their remaining expectations.

They say that in talks in the coming days, the Americans hope to satisfy Palestinian objections by issuing a statement declaring the 1967 lines the basis for negotiations, and the United States will attempt to compel the Israelis to endorse their note.

Israeli officials have in public repeatedly refused to accede to the Palestinian demands, calling them preconditions on issues that must be agreed at the end, not the start, of talks.

Senior aide to the president Tayyeb Abdul Rahim, accompanying Abbas, told Reuters: "We're between two opinions: should Israel agree to stop building settlements, or should they agree to a state on the 1967 borders to go back to talks.

"What's stronger? (The second) means that all settlements are illegitimate. America is convinced of our point of view ... Israel has not yet agreed to a state on the 1967 lines, but it will go to the talks on that basis."

Nintendo brings notsostealthy black 3DS XL to the US on August 11th

Looking for a (slightly) less conspicuous take on the 3DS XL? If you live in the US or Canada, you'll get it when the all-black version of Nintendo's giant handheld reaches those countries on August 11th. Don't expect any bonuses with the subtler color, though. The darker-hued 3DS XL costs the same $200 as before, and it's virtually identical to the Japanese version that launched last fall. It's shipping at the same time as Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, however, which makes it a decent consolation prize for gamers who can't get a Luigi edition 3DS LL to call their own.

'Game of Thrones' actor: Walder's 'irredeemable'

TV

David Bradley hasn't yet signed a contract to do more "Game of Thrones," but is hopeful his Walder Frey will be back.

In the bloody aftermath of the ?Game of Thrones? Red Wedding episode, actor David Bradley is persona non grata. ?Wedding invitations have dried up,? he joked to reporters at the Television Critics Association's press tour.

Bradley plays the nefarious Walder Frey, who will forever be known as the worst wedding host ever for the bloody union that happened under his roof.

?I love playing (Walder) because he?s just irredeemable,? Bradley told TODAY.com. ?He just relishes what he does. It?s almost iconic relish.?

There?s little doubt that Bradley will be returning to the role for the next round of HBO's ?GoT,? and Bradley couldn?t be happier.

?My character is still alive, and he appears later in the books, so although I don?t have a contract, I?m hopeful I?ll be back for the next season,? Bradley said. ?I think he has a lot more to give.?

Bradley noted that it?s interesting to be known as such a reviled character.

?I was actually really enjoying (the Red Wedding), every bit of it,? he confided. ?What does that say about me as a person??

Walder Frey wiped out a fairly substantial number of cast members in that now notorious scene, including the beloved King in the North Robb Stark, Queen Talisa, Catelyn Stark and more all in one fell swoop.

With so many deaths in just three seasons, ?Game of Thrones? might run out of British actors before the show begins to struggle for more stories. (After all, George R. R. Martin's novels ? upon which the epic drama is based ? aren't writing themselves, and the show is quickly gaining ground.)

?I think of those spiked heads on the castle wall, each one another actor who won?t be able to return to the show,? Mark Addy, better known as the late King Robert Baratheon, told TODAY.com.

As fans of the novels ? and now the show ? know all too well, Martin doesn't hesitate when it comes to killing off characters, no matter how big or small their role may be. So it wouldn't be a stretch to anticipate more visits from the Grim Reaper in the coming season. After all, there is a war going on for the Iron Throne.

Fans can only hope British thespians can fill in the ranks as quickly as Khaleesi?s army of the Unsullied.

Meilutyte, other teens doing just fine at worlds

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? For Ruta Meilutyte, a gold medal would merely be a bonus.

She's already grabbed what she came for at these world swimming championships.

A breakout star at last year's London Olympics, the 16-year-old from Lithuania set the first world record of the meet Monday night ? in the semifinals of the 100-meter breaststroke, no less.

Meilutyte will be an overwhelming favorite in the final Tuesday, but she considers the record a bigger accomplishment than a world championship. She nearly broke the mark during the morning preliminaries, then returned in the evening to go even faster.

The youngster touched in 1 minute, 4.35 seconds, beating the record set by American Jessica Hardy in 2009 at the end of the rubberized suit era.

"My biggest aim is accomplished now and I'll give it my best shot in the final," said Meilutyte, who trains in Britain. "It's one of the steps, one of the dreams. Obviously, a gold medal would be a cherry on top."

The kids are doing all right at these worlds, that's for sure.

Eighteen-year-old Missy Franklin cruised into the final of the 100 backstroke as the top qualifier, despite a tough start in the semifinals when her right leg slipped while pushing off the wall. Another young American, 16-year-old Katie Ledecky, followed up her gold medal in the 400 freestyle by easily qualifying for the 1,500 free final.

"It's so incredible to see the youth that the sport has and that it will continue to have," Franklin said. "It's so awesome watching it and kind of being a part of this whole experience as it's happening."

There were no American golds on the second night of swimming at the Palau Sant Jordi.

Christian Sprenger made sure the Australian men won't endure another gold-medal shutout like the one in London, edging South African world-record holder Cameron van der Burgh in the men's 100 breast.

"To finally have the Australian anthem played for me, it's an extraordinary feeling, and after a swim I couldn't be prouder of," Sprenger said. "Our team had some setbacks last year, but we came through stronger. We are going to be back and going to be stronger."

Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom knocked off another world-record holder, Dana Vollmer of the U.S., in the 100 butterfly. For Sjostrom, the victory came four years after she won the same event at the world championships in Rome, which was followed by the bitter disappointment of fourth-place finishes at both the 2011 worlds and the Olympics.

"It's hard to believe because my confidence hasn't been that good after lots of fourth places," she said. "Now I am so happy. My confidence is so much better now. I know I can swim so much faster."

Vollmer, who took an extended break after the Olympics and came into the event battling an illness, settled for the bronze with a time more than a second off her gold-medal performance in London.

"The goal is to always try and win, but with where I am right now I am really happy with the bronze," Vollmer said. "I needed the fall off to recharge looking to 2016. It is disappointing now, but it lights that fire to get back in the pool and keep working hard for Rio."

Hungary's Katinka Hosszu ran away with a dominating win in the women's 200 individual medley, with Ye Shiwen among those in her wake. The 17-year-old from China, another of the young stars at the last Olympics, was last at the final turn and settled for fourth ? not even making the medal podium in Barcelona.

Ye swept the IMs in London, setting a world record in the 400.

"That was slower than expected but I did everything I could," she said through a translator. "After the Olympics I couldn't sleep, so I couldn't prepare like I had done before. I'm five kilograms heavier than I was at the Olympics. I need to go back and train harder and hopefully I'll do better next time. I was happy with my butterfly but nothing else."

Hosszu made it look easy, leading at every stroke change and cruising to the wall nearly 1.5 seconds ahead of the field.

"That was kind of my plan to go out and be aggressive from the beginning," she said. "I saw nobody was coming, so I just wanted to touch the wall and start celebrating."

Hosszu finished nearly 7 seconds behind Ye in the 200 IM at London, and just missed a medal with a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM.

This time, it was Ye coming over to shake hands with the winner.

"I was really surprised," Hosszu said. "I wasn't sure of the order after me. It was only later I saw she wasn't on the podium. I am sure she will be back on the podium. She is a great swimmer."

Longtime Brazilian star Cesar Cielo took gold in the 50 fly ? a non-Olympic event ? with Eugene Godsoe of the U.S. grabbing the silver.

But Meilutyte was the star of the night without even winning a medal.

She just keeps getting better after upsetting American Rebecca Soni for the Olympic gold in the 100 breast last summer. With Soni taking the year off, there's no doubt that Meilutyte is the new queen of the breaststroke ? at the moment and perhaps years to come.

"It's a new breed of swimmer coming up," van der Burgh said. "The 100 has become more of a sprint than it was before. If you are too slow than you can never catch up, and I think that's the big change."

Australia's Alicia Coutts didn't win gold but deserved a shout-out for pulling off a grueling double. She finished second in both the 100 fly and 200 IM, one night after anchoring the Aussies to silver in the 400 free relay.

Coutts was in tears after getting caught by American Megan Romano in the relay, feeling she let her team down, but the Aussie is piling up quite a medal haul in Barcelona.

The home crowd got a thrill when Mireia Belmonte of Spain won bronze in the 200 IM.

Meanwhile, Ryan Lochte put himself in position to take a run at his first individual gold of these championships. He was the second-fastest qualifier in the semifinals of the 200 free behind Russia's Danila Izotov.

Scientists find mystery coffin at Richard III site

(AP) ? A team of archaeologists said Monday it has unearthed an unusual coffin-within-a-coffin in the central England parking lot where it found the skeleton of King Richard III, and that they hope to identify the remains within.

University of Leicester scientists have been digging at the Grey Friars site in Leicester after finding the body of Richard there in September. He died nearby in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field.

The team said it had discovered a fully intact medieval stone coffin during a dig in September but wasn't able to investigate it further at the time. When it was opened this week, the team said, it found a lead coffin within it, one likely to contain a "high status" individual.

Scientists think the lead coffin ? which has a hole through which the deceased's feet can be seen ? could contain one of the friary's founders, a medieval monk, or the remains of a 14th-century medieval knight, Sir William Moton.

The archaeologists say that tests must be carried out to determine how to open the lead coffin without damaging the remains.

The University of Leicester's Matthew Morris said no one on the team had ever seen a lead coffin within a stone coffin before.

"It was as exciting as finding Richard III," he said in a statement. "We still don't know who is inside ? so there is still a question mark over it."

India to announce steps to narrow current account deficit: Rajan

NEW DELHI | Tue Jul 30, 2013 3:19pm IST

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India will announce measures to help narrow the current account deficit in the next few weeks, including looking at ways of bringing in foreign investments, Chief Economic Adviser Raghuram Rajan said at a news briefing on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the RBI left interest rates unchanged as it supports a battered rupee but said it will roll back recent liquidity tightening measures when stability returns to the currency market.

India posted a record current account deficit of 4.8 percent of gross domestic product in the year ended in March, which has been a key source of weakness in the rupee.

The benchmark 10-year bond yield fell two basis points to 8.12 percent after Rajan's comments.

ASUS eying 2014 for US smartphone launch

It wouldn't be the first time ASUS saw a US smartphone launch -- though last time the company had the GPS experts at Garmin to help it find its way. This time, according to Jonney Shih, the maker of both the Padfone and Fonepad (coincidence?) is looking to take a more direct route. The ASUS chairman told All Things D that his company has been making progress building bridges with retailers and carriers alike in an attempt to succeed in the already crowded US market. And while it may not be impossible, a 2013 launch is looking unlikely. "I think next year is more reasonable," he told the site.

Is Silicon Valley Losing Out on Business Software Companies ...

More and more software is being delivered to businesses through the cloud. But despite Silicon Valley?s reputation as the world epicenter of technology, the Bay Area is losing out on these newer software companies, according to one East Coast investor.

OpenView Venture Partners Managing Director Adam Marcus, whose firm is in Boston, pulled together a list of 96 public companies that deliver business software as a Web service and found that two-thirds of them were founded and continue to be headquartered outside the Bay Area, in places ranging from Weston, Fla., to Tulsa, Okla., to Israel and Beijing.

Founders of business software companies tend to be older?in their 30s and 40s?with families who are already established in their communities, Mr. Marcus says. ?They don?t feel this juvenile need to be in San Francisco.?

Also, the Bay Area is an expensive place to do business and to invest. Mr. Marcus says company valuations in San Francisco are 50% to 100% higher than anywhere in the U.S., and it?s an unstable environment for young companies.

?The biggest problem in San Francisco is an employee base that?s massively transient. They?re constantly looking for the next great opportunity, and people are poached all the time? Many of our companies have zero unforced attrition, but there?s not a company in San Francisco that can claim anything close to that,? Mr. Marcus says.

A closer look at OpenView?s data shows a less dire picture for the Bay Area than Mr. Marcus claims. Most of the companies on the list have offices in the Bay Area even if they?re not headquartered there, and four of them have been acquired by Bay Area companies since he pulled the list together.

(Two companies also moved to the Bay Area?although one moved out?and one acquired a Bay Area company whose offices remain intact).

Emergence Capital Partners General Partner Brian Jacobs, whose firm invests in business software companies out of San Mateo, Calif., about 20 miles south of San Francisco, says the total equity value of the Bay Area companies on the list is higher than for the non-Bay Area companies ($180 billion versus $169 billion), even though the Bay Area companies are outnumbered 2 to 1.

The list also omits some significant Bay Area companies, Mr. Jacobs says?including Workday Inc., SuccessFactors Inc., Ariba Inc. and Taleo Corp.?three of which were acquired by other Bay Area companies for more than $1 billion each.

Mr. Jacobs agrees that Bay Area valuations are high, and he says the area also lacks expertise in vertical markets such as automotive, energy and health care that are now critical for software companies trying to sell to those markets.

Still, companies that are built in the Bay Area can compete against the best, he says, because they have access to the best software company talent in the world, and it?s the only place where technology remained important to the local economy after the dot-com bust.

?During the bubble I was with (St. Paul Venture Capital) in Minnesota, and everybody was excited about Minnesota being the next Silicon Valley. That went away,? Mr. Jacobs says.

Non-Bay Area software companies continue to attract big investments. TOA Technologies Inc., whose software is used by companies to manage field service workers, raised $66 million last month from Technology Crossover Ventures and is staying put in Beachwood, Ohio, near Cleveland, according to co-founder and Chief Executive Yuval Brisker.

?I think the beauty of what you?re seeing now is the emergence of creativity everywhere. Where in the past you had to travel to the centers of finance and technology to get things done, now you don?t have to,? says Mr. Brisker, who adds that it?s easier to compete for talented people in Cleveland, too.

OpenView doesn?t invest in San Francisco companies, Mr. Marcus says. ?We?re concerned that prices are getting ahead of performance.?

Is it OK for parents to Facebook private message new teachers?

I was having dinner with a Gwinnett County teacher last week and throughout the entire meal, her phone kept dinging with messages.

We finally asked her what was going on and she said her school posted the class lists that day and parents from her new class were ?private messaging her on Facebook.

Some were saying they were excited to be in her class and others were explaining other concerns or situations.

And while I understand parents needing to communicate with teachers, I just think it?s rather presumptuous to track down the teacher through social media and bother her on her summer break.

Next week that teacher will be at school preparing for the year, and I have no issue with the parents emailing her at her school account before the first day of school. I think that?s totally appropriate, but the private messaging on FB seemed rude.

What do you think: Is private messaging your future or current teacher on FB or Twitter presumptuous and stalker-like? Or are their social media accounts fair game?

Boston, MA, July 29, 2013 -- While most children cannot be shielded from emotionally traumatic events, clinicians can target those who are most vulnerable to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to a large study from Boston Children's Hospital. Findings appear online in the August issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, accompanied by an editorial.

Researchers led by Katie McLaughlin, PhD, of the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at Boston Children's, analyzed data on 6,483 teenparent pairs from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, a survey of the prevalence and correlates of mental disorders in the United States.

Overall, 61 percent of the teens (ages 13 to 17) had been exposed to at least one potentially traumatic event in their lifetime, including interpersonal violence (such as rape, physical abuse or witnessing domestic violence), injuries, natural disasters and death of a close friend or family member. Nineteen percent had experienced three or more such events.

Risk factors associated most strongly with trauma exposure included:

  • Lack of both biological parents in the home.
  • Pre-existing mental disorders, particularly behavioral disorders like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder.

Of all teens exposed to trauma, 4.7 percent had experienced PTSD under DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. Risk factors for PTSD included:

  • Female gender: Of the total sample, girls had a lifetime prevalence of PTSD of 7.3 percent, and boys 2.2 percent.
  • Events involving interpersonal violence: the lifetime prevalence of PTSD was 39 percent for teens who had been raped and 25 percent for those physically abused by a caregiver.
  • Underlying anxiety and mood disorders (also a risk factor for exposure).

Risk factors for lack of recovery from PTSD included underlying bipolar disorder, exposure to an additional traumatic event, living in poverty and being a U.S. native.

Google Chromecast: Does It Deserve a Place In Your Living Room?

Last week, Google unveiled the Chromecast: a $35 HDMI stick that can stream content directly to your TV. It sold out nearly immediately due to the low price, but can it replace other streaming devices like the Roku or Apple TV?

The Set Up Is Easy Enough

Google Chromecast: Does It Deserve a Place In Your Living Room? How it works: The Chromecast has a dead simple setup process, all things considered. For instance, you don't have any remote control. You need a smartphone, tablet, or PC to use it. In any other situation, this would cause some set up problems for a device with no native input.

Fortunately, the Chromecast pairs directly with your control device for the initial setup. It sends you to a webpage where you'll either download an app or browser extension to conduct the initial pairing. Once you've entered your Wi-Fi password, though, it just sits on your network waiting for you to send something to the big screen.

How it's different: The Roku, Apple TV and similar devices provide a set up process nearly as simple as the Chromecast. It's easy enough to enter Wi-Fi information, although other boxes typically require you to sign in to your various accounts to stream content. The Chromecast doesn't ask for any account info because you're already logged in to the apps you're using on the remote device. In that sense, the Chromecast is a little nicer. However, logging in to accounts is also a problem you'll only deal with once on boxes like the Roku. In my own experience, setting up the Chromecast was simple. However, others (including our own Adam Dachis) have reported some difficulty getting it to work while using both a Mac and a Nexus 7. Your mileage may vary.

The Supported Apps Are Great, Especially YouTube

Google Chromecast: Does It Deserve a Place In Your Living Room? How it works: Once you have everything set up, any connected device in the house can send videos to the TV. Users don't have to log in, enter any code, or join a group. Once your Chromecast is on the Wi-Fi network, every device on that network is effectively a remote.

If you're using a supported app, it works great. Right now, the Chromecast only officially works with Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Music and Movies. These apps have a button in the Action Bar that will connect to the Chromecast and allow you to start streaming content. It doesn't actually transfer video from your device to the TV, though. If it's available via a server, the Chromecast will elect to get it straight from the source directly, which aids performance.

Most of the apps work just fine, but YouTube especially shines. Multiple users can connect to the Chromecast (though it will interrupt a video if you are watching as they join). Each person can play and pause the stream as well as add videos to the active playlist. This highlights a distinct potential advantage of Chromecast. Remotes aren't just remotes. They're interactive mini-apps within the main apps themselves. If developers can leverage this, the Chromecast could offer much more than the typical set-top box. Unfortunately, only YouTube takes advantage of this extended capability.

How it's different: Other boxes typically have some form of app support. However, utilizing smartphones and tablets offers a lot of flexibility. YouTube brings some distinct advantages with the group playlist functionality, but beyond that, most set top boxes will still be better for now, if for no other reason than because they have more services. Hulu, HBO GO, ESPN, and a variety of other popular apps are completely unavailable, except by screensharing a browser tab.

Browser Streaming Is Not As Good

Google Chromecast: Does It Deserve a Place In Your Living Room? How it works: When Google can't quite build an ecosystem from scratch, the company has a habit of offering a complex workaround that technically covers the empty bases but isn't the best experience. This is what the browser streaming feature does. For starters, you can't use your phone to stream a browser tab. Mobile devices don't have the ability to stream anything to the Chromecast if an app doesn't have the functionality built-in.

The result is that laptops have an entirely different experience with the Chromecast. YouTube sharing via the site doesn't have the same group playlist functionality as using the apps. You can stream anything that Chrome can see, but it can get jittery if your Wi-Fi connection isn't that strong. If your connection slows or hiccups, the tab casting can't buffer, so your video will just skip over a portion. As long as your connection is solid, it's fine, but if not, the video can get unusable.

It's also not ideal for watching videos on the couch. Forgoing the remote control can kind of work when you're replacing it with a phone or tablet, but a laptop is big, clunky, and not designed to be a handheld controller for something else. If you're comfortable with that, then it's great, but it's overly cumbersome.

Also, one note on playing local files: you can do it. Sort of. By opening a local video in Chrome and casting that tab, you can stream files you've downloaded to your TV. However, this is less than ideal. This also means that you're essentially watching a video of a video. This can result in a loss of quality. For a YouTube clip, that's not the worst thing. For that 1080p Blu-Ray rip you made, it's borderline painful.

How it's different: The Chromecast's solution is a stopgap. Google has made the SDK available for developers to plug into the Chromecast directly, but until they do (assuming many will), tab casting fills the void. For streaming content that's not available via an app, you have to pull out a laptop. This means that the remote that you're going to need will be dictated by which service you use to watch a particular video. Local file playback is similarly up in the air. In most cases, it may just be simpler to plug your laptop directly into the TV. Except, that defeats the point of most set-top boxes: to make things easier. HTPCs have their purpose, but if you want something like the Chromecast to begin with, chances are this isn't going to be very satisfying for regular use.

The Chromecast Is Worth Exactly What it Costs

Ultimately, the Chromecast has a lot of potential. It's not quite Google's version of Airplay. Services that support native playback are actually using lightweight HTML5 apps and streaming content directly from servers. Flinging a video from your iPod to the Chromecast isn't quite in the cards yet.

However, getting Netflix and YouTube is worth $35, if you can't already play them on your TV some other way. Additionally, Google Play is actually a pretty great service. On average, movie rentals from Play Movies are slightly cheaper than Amazon, and Play Music is actually a pretty great subscription option. Until Google gets its apps on to other devices, the Chromecast is the best way to get their content on to your TV if you don't have an HTPC connected directly.

However, the Chromecast is unlikely to dethrone any particular streaming box in its current form. We can collectively check back in a year or so to see if developers pick up the platform, but for the moment it needs more proper app support to gain any real ground. That being said, Google has it priced perfectly.

Cancer hospital names new CEO

Temple University Health System appointed Dr. Richard I. Fisher as president and CEO of Fox Chase Cancer Center.

The post had been vacant since the departure of Dr. Michael Seiden, who left the Philadelphia cancer hospital in January six months after its merger into the Temple health system was completed.

Fisher joined the Temple system in March as senior associate dean for cancer programs at Temple University School of Medicine, a title he will retain.

?The Health System as a whole is fortunate to be able to draw on Dr. Fisher?s clear capabilities as a cancer center administrator, clinician and research investigator to lead Fox Chase Cancer Center,? said Dr. Larry R. Kaiser, dean of Temple University School of Medicine and President and CEO of Temple University Health System. ?In his new roles, he will play a vital part in sustaining our forward momentum and help us maximize the opportunities offered by the affiliation of Fox Chase with Temple University Health System.?

Before joining Fox Chase and Temple Health, Fisher was a professor of medicine and vice president for strategic and program development at the University of Rochester Medical Center's Wilmot Cancer Center.

The Rookies: Why Falcons Rookie Is the Most Compelling Story in NFL

There's a documentary being produced about his life story. He was featured on CNN, 60 Minutes and many other high-profile shows.

It's hard to get over the Brian Banks story.

In case you don't know, Banks was a standout athlete at Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, Calif., back in 2002. After mulling offers from some of the top programs in the country, the 6'4'', 225-pound linebacker committed to play for Pete Carroll at USC.

Everything was looking up until a classmate falsely accused Banks of rape. He faced a possible 41-year sentence but eventually agreed to a plea deal of five years' prison time, probation and being registered as a sex offender.

In 2012, his accuser?admitted to her lie while being secretly recorded. The courts set Banks free, and he was exonerated at the age of 27. Five years of his life had been stolen from him.

Being falsely imprisoned would have broken most of us, but Banks stayed in shape both physically and mentally while behind bars, determined not to let his accuser win.

Once he was released in 2012, he signed with the Las?Vegas Locomotives of the UFL.?He also had a tryout with Carroll's Seattle Seahawks?during NFL minicamps, and a year later, has signed with the Atlanta Falcons.?

Banks still has a long way to go after such a long time away from the gridiron. He needs to learn terms, concepts and new techniques if he wishes to make the Falcons' roster as an inside linebacker.?

Regardless of whether he makes the team, the now 28-year-old will continue to serve as a spokesperson for the California Innocence Project, a cause he's been very outspoken about.?

Check out the video above, as we caught up with Banks getting ready for the Falcons training camp in West Hollywood. And let us know in the comments below if you think he will make an impact in the NFL this year or in the future.?

Neighbors describe different sides of Fla. gunman

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) ? The gunman who went on a shooting rampage at a South Florida apartment complex was described as a quiet man who took his mother to doctor appointments, yet also someone who was known for getting into fights and yelling at his mom.

The conflicting portrayals of Pedro Vargas, 42, emerged as police tried to piece together why he set ablaze the apartment he lived in with his mother and then killed six people before police fatally shot him.

As the eight-hour standoff unfolded, horrified residents hunkered down in their homes, at times so close to the action that they could feel the gunfire or hear negotiations between the gunman and police, authorities and witnesses said Saturday.

As the rampaged winded down, Vargas held two people hostage at gunpoint for up to three hours in their apartment until a SWAT team entered and killed him, police said. The hostages were not hurt.

"Nobody seems to know why he acted the way he acted," said Lt. Carl Zogby, a spokesman with the Hialeah Police Department.

Detectives were investigating whether Vargas had any ongoing disputes with the building manager, as some residents believed. His mother was not home at the time of the shootings.

"He was a good son," said Ester Lazcano, who lived on the same floor as Vargas and his mother. "He'd take her in the morning to run errands" and to doctor appointments.

Lazcano said she was in the shower when she heard the first shots, and then there were at least a dozen more. "I felt the shots," she said.

Miriam Valdes, 70, was in a friend's apartment two doors down. She said she heard officers trying to convince Vargas to surrender.

She said the gunman first asked for his girlfriend and then his mother but refused to cooperate.

Valdes said Vargas was also known as a difficult person who sometimes got into fights and yelled at his mother.

"He was a very abusive person," she said. "He didn't have any friends there."

Police were called to the aging, five-story apartment building in Hialeah, a working class suburb a few miles northwest of downtown Miami, on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The first calls reported a fire, but when firefighters arrived, they heard shots and immediately notified police, Zogby said.

Vargas, who has no known criminal record, set a combustible liquid on fire in his fourth-floor apartment. Building manager Italo Pisciotti, 79, and his wife, Camira Pisciotti, 69, saw smoke and ran to the unit, Zogby said. When they arrived, Vargas opened the door and fired, killing both.

Vargas then went back into his burning apartment and fired 10 to 20 shots from a 9mm pistol into the street. One of the bullets struck 33-year-old Carlos Javier Gavilanes, who was parking his car after returning home from work. Zogby said his body was found next to his vehicle.

The gunman then kicked his way into a third-floor apartment, where he shot to death Patricio Simono, 54; his wife Merly Niebles, 51; and their 17-year-old daughter. Family members said Simono worked at a car wash and Niebles cleaned hotel rooms. Their daughter wanted to be a nurse.

Agustin Hernandez, Niebles' brother-in-law, loaded several old pictures and other items from his relative's apartment in a grocery cart and into his car. One showed his teenage niece smiling in a red graduation gown. Another pictured his sister-in-law posing in a white dress and pearls.

A binder also from the apartment had pop artist Justin Beiber's name on the spine, presumably belonging to the teenage girl, who family members identified as Priscilla Perez.

Marcela Chavarri, director of the American Christian School, said the Perez was about to enter her senior year.

"She was a lovely girl," Chavarri said through tears. "She was always happy and helping her classmates."

All six people were killed in a short time span, Zogby said, and it's possible they were all dead by the time police arrived.

Officers and Vargas then engaged in an hours-long shootout and chase, with police following the gunman from one floor to the next.

"He kept running from us as he fired at us and we fired at him," Zogby said.

Several hours into the ordeal, Vargas forced his way into a fifth-story unit and held two people captive. Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez said negotiators and a SWAT team tried talking with him from the other side of the door.

Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire. Zogby said Vargas still had several rounds of ammunition when he was killed.

"He was ready to fight," Zogby said.

MaskMe

Hardly a day goes by without news of another organization suffering a data breach involving thousands or even millions of stolen user data records. If your email information appears in the mix, your antispam utility will probably see a spike in pointless mail. Abine's free MaskMe service lets you communicate with retailers, discussion groups, and other websites without ever giving them your actual email address, so they can't lose it in a data breach (or sell it to spammers). As a bonus, it also serves as a simple password manager.

MaskMe installs as an add-on for Firefox or Chrome; support for Safari and Internet Explorer is planned. The only immediately visible sign of MaskMe's presence is a small button on the toolbar.

Levels of Service
Just after installation, MaskMe runs as a local service. Your password data stays on your PC or Mac, and you can check your masked emails by logging in to your MaskMe temporary Inbox online. That arrangement is very secure, but not nearly as convenient as just using your normal email client.

Most users will want to set up email forwarding. In this mode, MaskMe forwards each received message to your actual email address, keeping a copy in the temporary inbox for four hours in case there's a problem with forwarding. Any response to the forwarded message will be automatically tweaked to show the masked email address as the sender. Setting up an email address also lets you have MaskMe fill in your real, unmasked email address, if you desire.

Upgrading from basic MaskMe to MaskMe Online is free. Doing so lets you backup your MaskMe data to the cloud, sync between multiple PCs, and access your data from any computer.

MaskMe Premium, currently in beta, will add a number of very useful features. With a Premium subscription you can sync your MaskMe data to iOS or Android devices and make masked phone calls, so the person you call won't get your actual phone number. Even more impressive is the masked credit card feature, which lets you generate a one-use credit card for each transaction. We'll review MaskMe Premium when its beta period finishes.

Masked Email
Using MaskMe to protect your email account is really, really easy. When you click on a Web form field that asks for an email address, MaskMe pops up a tiny menu window just below the field offering to mask your email. Click the button and it fills in the field with a random email address like "7bf147ea@opayq.com" that's specific to the website in question. If you've set up email forwarding, you'll also get the option to auto-fill your real email address.

When the website sends you mail, it first hits the MaskMe online mailbox and then, assuming you've set up forwarding, moves along to your regular inbox. Here's where it gets interesting. If you ever receive a spam message to one of your masked emails, you can immediately disable that address by clicking a link in the header that MaskMe inserts into the message. You can also review your masked email addresses online and block or un-block any of them with a single click.

In testing, I found a few sites where MaskMe didn't offer to mask my email. If that happens to you, just right-click the entry field and find "Mask My Email" under the MaskMe submenu. It's also possible to enter a domain directly in the MaskMe online console and generate a masked email for that domain.

Of course, MaskMe can't do anything about spammers who've already obtained your actual email address. To get full-scale spam protection, you'd need to create a brand-new email address and remember to always, always mask it.

BLACK, AL -- It won't be long before kids in the community have a place to ride their bikes to meet with friends.

The children helped Mayor Debi Showers dedicate the ground where the new playground will set at a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday.

The kids said they cannot wait for a new place to play. Adults are excited for a place where they can all spend time together.
