Spire permanently installed on WTC tower

NEW YORK (AP) ? A tall, heavy spire was fully installed atop One World Trade Center on Friday, bringing the New York City structure to its symbolic height of 1,776 feet.

Loud applause and cries of joy erupted from construction workers assembled below as the huge, silver spire was gently lowered and secured into place.

"It's a pretty awesome feeling," Juan Estevez said from a temporary platform on the roof of the tower where he and other workers watched the milestone.

"It's a culmination of a tremendous amount of team work ... rebuilding the New York City skyline once again," said Estevez, a project manager for Tishman Construction.

He said the workers around him were "utterly overjoyed."

Installation of the 408-foot, 758-ton spire was completed after pieces of it had been transported to the roof of the building last week. It will serve as a world-class broadcast antenna and also as a beacon to ward off aircraft.

[The Weekly Flickr: Worker captures amazing WTC photos]

The building is at the northwest corner of the site where the twin World Trade Center towers were destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The 72-story 4 World Trade Center is under construction at the southeast corner of the site.

Lee Ielpi, whose firefighter son died after responding to the attacks, watched workers secure the spire from his office at the nearby 9/11 Tribute Center, which he co-founded.

"The building looks spectacular. ... I'm looking forward to the day when the cranes come down and they light the spire at night," he said. "It's supposed to be a very moving experience."

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site, said the LED-powered light would be activated in the next few months.

"It's going to have a light that you can see from tens of miles away," said Port Authority Vice Chairman Scott Rechler. "And that light will change colors and in the next few months we are going to be activating that light, and it will be a beacon of hope just like the Statue of Liberty."

The addition of the spire, and its raising of the building's height to 1,776 feet, makes One World Trade Center the tallest structure in the U.S. and third-tallest in the world, although building experts dispute whether the spire is actually an antenna ? a crucial distinction in measuring the building's height.

If it didn't have the spire, One World Trade Center would be shorter than the Willis Tower in Chicago, which stands at 1,451 feet and currently has the title of tallest building in the U.S., not including its own antennas.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, a Chicago-based organization considered an authority on such records, says an antenna is something simply added to the top of a tower that can be removed. By contrast, a spire is something that is part of the building's architectural design.

The tower is slated to open for business in 2014.

Tenants include the magazine publisher Conde Nast, the government's General Services Administration and Vantone Holdings China Center, which will provide business space for international companies.

(AP) ? Rescue workers in diving gear found seven bodies Wednesday in the wreckage after a cargo ship slammed into the dock at Genoa, toppling the busy Italian port's control tower into the harbor.

Four people were hospitalized and two others remained unaccounted for, Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue teams at the scene, told The Associated Press.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday during a shift change in the control tower, as the Jolly Nero cargo ship was leaving port accompanied by tugboats.

By Wednesday morning, all that was left of the tower was its mangled exterior staircase, tilted on its side. The tower itself ? which was located on the edge of a dock jutting out into the harbor ? was either in the water or in a heap of rubble and steel on the dock.

Cari confirmed the seven dead, saying rescue crews recovered several of the bodies from an area near the tower's submerged elevator. There were fears that those still missing might be trapped inside the elevator, Cari said.

There were no reports of missing ship crew.

"This event is unbelievable because we had the best weather navigation conditions," said Luigi Merlo, president of the Genoa port authority. He declined to speculate on a cause, saying the ship had plenty of room to maneuver in the harbor and shouldn't have ended up so close to the dock.

One theory prosecutors were considering was that a possible mechanical failure aboard the ship left the captain unable to steer it properly, Italian news reports said, citing prosecutor Michele de Lecce.

Mauro described the ship, the Jolly Nero of the Ignazio Messina & C. SpA Italian shipping line, as somewhat unique in its height, so that the full weight of the ship slammed "violently" into the tower itself, not just the dock.

"The ship directly impacted the control tower," he told Sky TG24.

The Genoa-based Messina Line has a fleet of 14 cargo ships, with the Italian-flagged Jolly Nero listed at 239 meters (784 feet) long and 30 meters (98 feet) wide, according to its website.

The five bodies recovered included three coast guard officials in the tower at the time of the crash, a port captain and a tugboat operator, said Cmdr. Filippo Marini, a coast guard spokesman. The bodies of the other two dead were being recovered, he said.

In a statement, Messina said it was fully cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the "tragic" accident, which it said occurred during a normal maneuver to leave the port. It said Messina Line ships do the maneuver with regularity and are always accompanied by tugboats.

"There aren't words to express the dismay and profound condolences for the victims of this tragedy and their families," Messina said in a statement.

Andrea Furgani, an ambulance doctor and one of the first rescuers, said crews brought four injured to hospitals in Genoa.

"The conditions were critical. They mainly suffered wounds caused by compression, broken bones and wounds on the chest," he told the AP.

The disaster shook a nation that just a year ago witnessed another shipping tragedy when the Costa Concordia cruise ship slammed into a reef off Tuscany on Jan. 13, 2012, killing 32 people.

Parliament held a minute of silence Wednesday for the victims in Genoa, the mayor of Genoa proclaimed a period of mourning and Italian President Giorgio Napolitano sent his condolences to the victims' families on behalf of the nation.

Genoa's port, located on Italy's western Ligurian coast, is Italy's busiest in terms of cargo handling, according to the port authority website. It is also a major port of call for cruise ships sailing the Mediterranean.

Why the alleged Boston bombers' mom probably won't be extradited (+video)

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva may stay out of American custody because the US and Russia do not have a bilateral extradition treaty, despite efforts by Moscow to negotiate one.

The mother of the two Boston bombing suspects, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, has become a focus of interest after it emerged that her name had been added to a key terrorist watchlist in 2011 and fresh materials, including wiretaps, handed over to the US by the Russians showed her "vaguely discussing" jihad with her elder son two years ago.?

Ms. Tsarnaeva, a naturalized US citizen who moved back to Russia a few years ago, has best been known until now as the most passionate defender of her two sons, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar, up to the point of insisting that they were "framed" because they were Muslims. Now investigators may want to look into what role she may have played, if any, in the radicalization process that may have led her two sons to carry out the Boston Marathon bombing almost two weeks ago.

Tsarnaeva was reportedly added to the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment (TIDE)?database in 2011 at the request of US intelligence agencies. That list, which held about 750,000 names at the time, is used to compile the consolidated Terrorist Watchlist?used as the main reference tool by airlines and law enforcement agencies. It is believed her name, and that of her son Tamerlan, were appended to the list after the Russian FSB security service appealed for more information about the pair to the FBI and the CIA and warned of their growing radicalization.?

In recent days the Russians have also turned over wiretaps of conversations between Tsarnaeva, who was by that time back living in her native Dagestan, and her son Tamerlan in Boston. In one they reportedly discuss "jihad" in a general way. In another, Tsarnaeva is recorded talking with someone who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case.

In his annual town hall meeting with the Russian public last Thursday, President Vladimir Putin called for stepped up security cooperation?between the US and Russia in the wake of the Boston tragedy. He downplayed any links between Russia and the Boston bombers, and added "to our great regret" Russian security forces lacked any "operative information" that they might have shared with US law enforcement in the run up to the attack.

Tsarnaeva is an ethnic Avar, one of the largest groups in Russia's multi-national, but solidly Muslim, mountain republic of Dagestan?which abuts the Caspian Sea. Dagestan has been wracked for over a decade by a growing Islamist insurgency that has made parts of the republic a no-go zone even for law enforcement.

8 Ways Musicians Can Gain Media Coverage Indirectly [Kosha Dillz ...

Photo-21By indie rapper Kosha Dillz (@koshadillz).

It's not all the times that promotion promotion promotion of your brand/band will get you where you want to be. In fact, real tastemakers are far too tired for that and are looking for something deeper and more exciting.

Why not take a risk?

Come up with a word or have a store open for a limited time. Throw an extravagant party or a theme party. Make a festival happen. Let something else become popular that is not actually you or your brand. Do something nice for someone. Relink with your local high school sports team. Start writing passionately about something that is not you! Stop selling yourself. (I should take my own advice...trust me!)

Here is a list of 8 things that can put you on your way to more attention, without even demanding it in some crazy email to some writer or publicist.

1. Make up your own word.

Smang it = Smash it and bang. Believe it or not, there are other Youtube pheomenons out there besides the ones you know of. Turquoise Jeep has a great video with over 10,000,000 views called "Smang It." The word did not exist until then.

@turquoisejeep is known to "Smang It," keep it "Fried or Fertilized" and now fill up rooms of 500-1000 people from making up a word.

2. Become a writer - not just a song writer.

Although it's all over the US media of the touring circuit, Kitty Pryde has written articles that have been covered by Noisey Media. She does everything from interview people to write pieces that are quite off centered. Regardless I think she shines as a writer and can def end up speaking at universities in the near future in the same manner as Lil B.

3. Throw your own festival.

All of a sudden every year, Murs finds himself on various news radios and receiving massive media coverage for not just being a rapper, but being a curator and programmer of an awesome event. Murs has gained a lot of music fans for his curation skills.

4. Have the exclusive velvet rope merchandise.

@40Oz_van is someone who has the hat game on lock. I ordered a snap back for a total of $51 and was completely happy with it. He controls a market that only has a 24 hr. store and sells out sometimes before the 24 hr. period. If you don't get it, you're out of luck. But if you do have it, you will be part of an inner circle that has the special edition. I am more a fan of the brand of his exclusiveness rather than the actual hat. But I guess now I am a fan of his awesome hats too! He simply created a movement by making the "thing" not about himself.

5. Throw an awesome party. The most awesome exclusive party ever.

Gig-It is a really cool brand. Not only do they have a video game where you can control your own concert creation, from dressing the artist (including me, @koshadillz) to picking the songs you play, but they introduced the crowd to their game with performances from 2 Chainz, DJ Khaled, Nas and ice cream cones in sand filled shot glasses along with miniature pecan pies. Imagine if all gigs were like this? I can't wait to Gig-It! In fact, I respect them for doing that. What a way to get them talking...

BTW, you don't have to be so extravagant. You can throw a party that is free and give out homemade cupcakes and have it hosted by a vertically challenged person. People will want to know more and it'll get people talking. As long as you are having fun, people will want to know more.

6. Run a race for charity.

Damn. Remember when you were athletic and excited? Did you ever get involved in cross-fit? Some of the most exciting people in the world are those who are not athletically challenged. if you are?sign up for a 5k and try to make 3 miles. You will be surprised how much support you get and new people you meet along the way. You can pick a charity or just try to finish the race if you have that much trouble.

Check out concretehero.org for a race you might want to do.

Matt Diamond of Diamond Media 360 does PR as his main gig, but also hits marathons and tough mudders along the way. Check out toughmudder.com. Now is your chance to become part of a group that you have no clue what it entails. All I can tell you is that it has raised over $5,000,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

7. Volunteer with kids + local sports.

At the end of the day, a lot of the real players are mature enough to take care of the kids they create in the world. What have you done for the babies lately? It's never too late to lend a helping hand locally. I am an assistant coach with the wrestling team in my town in NJ. Whether you are a star, superstar, or one in the making?take some time out to give back. Sure you might lose a few hours you could've spend working, but you are probably so in your head about working, this may be the best thing for your work.

Did you know Masta Ace is a big time local football coach in NJ?

8. Get an interesting side job / main job.

I recently realized that my passion for garage sales is so real that I made an album called "Gina and The Garage Sale." On occasion I want to list things on eBay and I am really considering doing it full time. I used to deliver pizza full time as well and book shows while delivering pizza. I know a rapper who actually sells socks. What sounds more interesting to you in a press release choice?

a. Cook/Rocker

b. Delivery guy/Rapper

c. Drug Dealer/Rapper

d. eBay seller/Rapper

e. Sock seller/Rapper

What do all of these things have in common? They are all things done for someone or something else other than the rapper/band or brand directly. Each number listed above removes the brand/band from the event/act and makes you engage with humans and be perceived on a different level.

A lot of you wouldn't know who I am unless i wrote these things anyway! See? :)

@koshadillz is an artist-preneur who is currently on tour with the YouTube phenomenon @turquoisejeep. In between his touring schedule, he gets to write cool articles, work out at 24 hr fitness, speak Hebrew with his Mom on the phone, and kick it with 2 Chainz in random cities. He used to deliver pizza full time and sell drugs and go to jail a lot but now he is a really nice guy.

Kosha Dillz has merch at koshadillz.bigcartel.com. Check out his latest music video "Hangin' Out."
