We Look Back Earthily At 2012

60-Second Earth

Superstorms, electric cars, alternative fuels and arctic sea ice all made environmental news in 2012. David Biello reports.

Twenty-twelve was quite a year of change for the planet, if not quite the apocalypse imagined by New Age shamans or Hollywood producers.

Arctic summer sea ice shattered its previous record low, and set off a storm of speculation about what an ice-free Arctic might mean for future weird weather. In a bid to counter exactly this kind of thing, a team of would-be geoengineers dumped iron in the ocean off British Columbia to prompt a plankton bloom, in hopes of boosting local salmon populations and sucking CO2 out of the air.

In a perhaps less quixotic bid, scientists continued to work on breakthroughs that could alter our dependence on fossil fuels, from using microbes to turn seaweed into biofuels to better batteries for electric cars.

Speaking of which, an electric car, the Tesla Model S, became simply the best car of the year, according to Motor Trend. Meanwhile, the human population kept growing, urbanizing and struggling to either feed itself or not overfeed itself.

Finally, there was Hurricane Sandy, which closed our offices for a week and appeared to have blown climate change back onto the American political landscape, however briefly. Judging by what happened at the United Nations climate conference in Doha, however, 2012 was not the year when the United States or the world finally did something about restraining the greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change, not even CO2 capture and storage. And it doesn?t look like 2013 will be either.

That said, natural gas began to supplant coal in the U.S., driving down greenhouse gas emissions. And that's a good thing. Happy New Year!?David Biello [The above text is a transcript of this podcast]?

Person-Centered HealthCare; Short Review of Self-Monitoring System

Image

I am very much intrigued with the QS movement and self-monitoring for fitness and behavior modification.? I visited several exhibitors at the recent mHealthSummit meeting in Washington DC earlier this month and was interested in some of the products they had for self-tracking.? I actually ordered a BodyMedia Fit? and gave it to a friend to try out first as I thought it would be more interesting to get another person's opinion.? This individual is currently a member of Weight Watchers and on an exercise program.? I was curious to see if he thought the device could be helpful as a behavior modification aid.

He wore the BodyMedia Fit for 5 days and logged in his meal data and weight.? An example of the data screen is shown below:

Image

As you can see, the device measures calories burned, calories consumed (you have to input your meals), physical activity (moderate and vigorous), steps taken, and sleep duration.? There are drop-down menus for more detail.? For instance, to get an idea of when physical activity took place, just click on the arrow to the left and this is what you see:

?

ImageThis detail shows whether the activity was moderate or rigorous and when it actually took place.

When you log in your meals, the calories are not only counted, but broken down into fat, carbs, protein and alcohol and a neat little pie chart is created telling you where your calories are coming from:

Image

Image

?

?

?

There were also tips on "What is a Healthy Diet?" and an option to customize the page.

?

?

?

I asked this user several questions about the BodyMedia Fit to get his opinion of the device.? I was interested in Ease of Setup, Ease of Use, Accuracy, and OverAll Opinion.? Here are his answers:

  • Ease of Setup - the BodyMedia Fit was extremely easy to setup.? No problems with device or data logins, etc.
  • Ease of Use - Data loaded easily.? No problems except perhaps getting used to wearing the device - the elastic arm band was a little annoying at first.
  • Accuracy - This user judged the device at about 75% accuracy.? The steps seemed to be overestimated and sometimes steps were registered in the middle of the night or at other moments when the user was sure he was not up and about.? Physical activity also was thought to be slightly over-estimated.? Sleep patterns were fairly accurate though and the calorie count was accurate and helpful.
  • Overall opinion - The user liked the BodyMedia Fit and thought it was very "cool" in the way it collected all the data.? He said that he would have to wear it for a longer period of time to get an overall feel of how useful it could be for behavior modification.? He also mentioned that he would like to understand more how it works so he could understand why it is slightly overestimating his physical activity and he could perhaps customize it to be more accurate.

This was a fun experiment.? I am going to try this device myself now and see what I think.? People have to really take more responsibility for their own health and wellness.? Devices like the BodyMedia Fit can help!

NASA's TRMM satellite captured rainfall data on Tropical Depression Wukong as it struggles to stay together in the South China Sea. Wukong has been battered with wind shear for days and NASA satellite data still shows an area of moderate rainfall within the dying storm.

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission or TRMM satellite passed over Tropical Depression Wukong on Dec. 28 at 0328 UTC (10:28 p.m. EST, Dec. 27) and saw one area of moderate rainfall near the center of circulation. That area was generating a rainfall rate of about 1 inch/25 mm per hour. Most of the other precipitation in the storm is lighter and scattered.

On Dec. 28 at 0900 UTC (4 a.m. EST) Tropical Depression Wukong had maximum sustained winds near 25 knots (28.7 mph/46.3 kph). Satellite data helped pinpoint Wukong's center near 8.7 north latitude and 111.0 east longitude, about 280 miles (322 miles/518.6 km) east of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Wukong continues to move to the west-southwest staying south of Vietnam.

Wukong is moving around the southern edge of a ridge (elongated) area of high pressure and being battered with moderate southeasterly vertical wind shear. According to the forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), the wind shear has exposed the low level circulation center.

JTWC forecasters expect the depression to continue moving west-southwest over the next day or two before finally dissipating.

Four planets in 'habitable zones' spotted within spitting distance of Earth

Astronomers say they used a new statistical technique to find four possible super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth, Gliese 667C and tau Ceti.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / December 19, 2012

This diagram shows an artist's rendering comparing our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first 'habitable zone' planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. The 'habitable zone' is a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface.

Astronomers say they have uncovered evidence for what could be four super-Earth planets orbiting within the habitable zones of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth.

Three of those candidate planets are among a tightly packed clutch of five that orbit Gliese 667C, part of a triple-star system 22 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The other possible planet is one of five orbiting tau Ceti, a sun-like star 12 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.

Taken together, the detections not only add to accumulating evidence that planets look to be more common than stars ? and that planets in habitable zones could be more common than previously thought, some of researchers reporting the finds say.

The finds also illustrate the power of improved statistical tools to boldly uncover candidate planets where no planet had been found before.

The evidence for these candidate planets requires independent confirmation, the researchers caution.?Still, the tools represent "a real breakthrough," says Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the team reporting the results for tau Ceti. The approach the team took leaves only about one chance in 3 million that the detections could herald something other than a planet.

Since the mid-1990s, astronomers have bagged more than 850 extra-solar planets. The ultimate goal is to find rocky planets with Earth-like masses orbiting within their stars' habitable zones ? a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface. Liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for organic life.

Different groups of astronomers had aimed three telescopes for various lengths of time at tau Ceti and found nothing. Led by Mikko Tuomi at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the team reporting this latest analysis applied relatively new statistical tools to the combined data from these telescopes.

The result: "Five planets came out: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ... as clear as a bell," Dr. Vogt says.

Tau Ceti has about 78 percent of our own sun's mass, but its composition is quite similar, Dr. Tuomi's team reports. Its candidate planets range from 2 to 6.6 times Earth's mass.

The innermost object orbits the star once every 14 days, while the outermost takes 642 days to make its circuit. The fourth planet from the star, with a 168-day orbit, travels well within a zone where liquid water could remain stable on the planet's surface, the team estimates. However, the results don't speak directly to what the planets are made of.?

A similar story has played out for Philip Gregory, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Previous researchers had found two planets orbiting Gliese 667C, a red dwarf with 31 percent of the sun's mass. Using a broadly similar statistical approach, he reports detecting the initial two, plus three more planets. Three of the five fall within the star's habitable zone, he estimates.

60 jobs go as Comet closes

60 jobs go as Comet closes

SIXTY workers have lost their jobs after Bolton?s two Comet electrical stores closed down.

Comet went into administration in November and closed 41 stores across the UK last month.

The remaining 193 UK stores shops were shut yesterday, with the loss of 7,000 jobs, costing ?23 million, which will be paid by the government's redundancy payments service.

Bolton?s Trinity Retail Park and Middlebrook branches were among those that closed yesterday.

Staff at the Trinity branch were removing remaining furniture, fittings, paperwork and even floor linings.

One worker said: ?People are searching for a new job. I wouldn?t say they were angry or sad about what?s happened.

?They?re just getting on with it and trying to get other work.

The Middlebrook site has also been closed.

?Customers have still been arriving here to see if any stock is left, but the shop finished trading on Sunday and now we?re just clearing out the remaining bits and tidying up.?

One former customer said: ?It?s a shame that Comet has gone. It was a decent shop. I bought things there last Christmas and they were well priced. I think the other electrical stores will put up their prices now because there?s less competition.?

Middlebrook-based Appliances Online submitted a seven-figure bid to buy Comet?s website business last month.

No one from the firm was available for comment yesterday. Appliances Online is owned by DRL and was founded by Bolton entrepreneur John Roberts in 2000.

Deloitte is handling Comet?s administration.

Discounts abound as stores try to salvage season

NEW YORK (AP) -- When it comes to fat holiday discounts, better late than never.

This holiday shopping season, many stores haven't been offering the same blockbuster deals as they did last year. Instead, they've dangled offers of free shipping and no-fee layaways to lure shoppers.

But during the final weekend before Christmas, shoppers should expect to see more "70 percent off" and "buy one, get one free" signs as stores try to salvage a season that so far has been disappointing.

No more Government Motors: US selling GM shares

DETROIT (AP) -- The U.S. government's foray into the car business is slowly coming to an end.

The Treasury Department said Wednesday that it will sell its remaining stake in General Motors in the next year or so, winding down a $50 billion bailout that saved the iconic American car giant but also set off a heated debate about government intervention in private business that even influenced this year's presidential election.

Taxpayers will lose money on the deal, but it gets the government out of the car business. GM has done well over the past three years, piling up $16 billion in profits as car sales bounced back. Now it looks forward to losing the stigma of government ownership ? including the derisive moniker "Government Motors" ? that it claims cost it sales since it left bankruptcy protection in 2009.

Government issues new online child privacy rules

WASHINGTON (AP) -- New online child privacy rules will keep anonymous advertisers and marketers from siphoning personal information about preteens but won't restrain innovation among technology companies and businesses that rely on the Internet to reach consumers, government officials said Wednesday.

But those assurances failed to win over software developers who said the cost of complying with the new regulations and the risk of violating them will cause many responsible businesses to abandon the children's marketplace.

Information about children that cannot be collected unless a parent first gives permission now includes the location data that a cellphone generates, as well as photos, videos, and audio files containing a human image or voice, according to the rules announced Wednesday. Data known as "persistent identifiers" that allow a person to be tracked over time and across various websites are also considered personal data and covered by the rules, the agency said.

___

Obama: He and Boehner 'pretty close' to a deal

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Optimistic despite a tightening deadline, President Barack Obama said Wednesday he and House Speaker John Boehner are "pretty close" to a grand fiscal deal to avoid a first-of-the-year shock to the economy, but that congressional Republicans "keep on finding ways to say no as opposed to finding ways to say yes."

Obama cast a resolution to the "fiscal cliff" as a matter of political will. He said in the aftermath of the massacre of school children in Connecticut, the nation deserves a compromise by its political leaders.

Obama spoke to reporters at the White House after announcing an administration-wide response to Friday's shooting at an elementary school in Newtown that killed 20 first-graders and six adults.

___

US seeks 'balanced' trade relationship with China

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. is seeking a more balanced trade relationship with China at talks Wednesday that could set the tone for cooperation after political transitions in the world's two largest economies.

The annual joint commission on commerce and trade meeting comes weeks after President Barack Obama's re-election and the elevation of new leaders of China's ruling Communist Party.

Few concrete outcomes are expected, but Washington will be looking for signs of the economic policy direction under new Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The U.S. wants China to stimulate domestic demand and become less reliant on export growth and allow more market access for American companies.

___

US housing starts slowed to 861,000 in November

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. builders broke ground on fewer homes in November after starting work in October at the fastest pace in four years. Superstorm Sandy likely slowed starts in the Northeast.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that builders began construction of houses and apartments at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 861,000. That was 3 percent less than October's annual rate of 888,000, the fastest since July 2008.

Still, the decline follows months of strong gains. Housing starts remain on track for their best year in four years, and the housing market overall appears to be sustaining its recovery.

___

UBS to pay $1.5 billion over rate-rigging scandal

GENEVA (AP) -- Swiss bank UBS agreed Wednesday to pay $1.5 billion in fines for trying to manipulate a key interest rate that affects borrowers around the world.

The settlement with U.S., British and Swiss regulators caps a tough year for the company and the reputation of the global banking industry. The fine on UBS, which will also see two former traders charged with conspiracy, is triple the amount that British bank Barclays PLC agreed to pay in June to settle similar charges.

And it comes a week after HSBC agreed to pay nearly $2 billion to settle allegations of laundering money for Mexican drug cartels and countries under U.S. embargoes, such as Iran.

___

Getco buying Knight Capital in $1.4 billion deal

NEW YORK (AP) -- Nearly five months after a major software malfunction at Knight Capital roiled financial markets, the trading firm has agreed to sell itself to a competitor, Getco, in a cash-and-stock deal that the companies value at $1.4 billion.

Knight shareholders can choose $3.75 per share in cash or one share of stock in the new holding company. The per-share price ? which is more than the $3.50 per share that Getco offered last month ? is a 13 percent premium to Knight's Tuesday closing price. But it's a fraction of the company's worth before the meltdown.

Knight Capital Group Inc. has one of the most advanced platforms for trading brokerages. The Jersey City, N.J., company takes stock trading orders from brokers like TD Ameritrade and E-Trade and routes them to the New York Stock Exchange and other exchanges.

Dr Pepper maker fills out 10-calorie lineup

NEW YORK (AP) -- When it comes to the calories in diet soda, Dr Pepper thinks 10 is the new zero.

Starting next month, the country's No. 3 soft drink company plans to roll out 10-calorie versions of five of its biggest soda brands: 7-Up, Sunkist, Canada Dry, RC Cola and A&W Root Beer. The drinks are an extension of Dr Pepper Ten, which was launched last year as a better-tasting alternative for men who don't like the image or taste of diet soda.

But the new 10-calories sodas are being marketed to both men and women.

Unlike traditional diet sodas that use only artificial sweeteners and have zero calories, Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. says its 10-calorie sweetener mix has just enough high-fructose corn syrup to overcome any reservations people might have about the weak or cloying taste of diet drinks. And by taking away most the calories ? a can of regular typically has about 150 calories ? the company is washing away much of the guilt.

___

FedEx says it can grow by cutting costs

NEW YORK (AP) -- FedEx may be pessimistic about the U.S. economy, but it's confident about growing its earnings.

The world's second-largest package delivery company, a bellwether for economic health because of the vast number and kinds of shipments it handles, lowered its economic forecast for the U.S., saying there remains a lot of uncertainty for the country.

FedEx maintained its earnings forecast for the full fiscal year ending in May, counting on a massive cost reduction plan and a slightly more optimistic view of growth overseas. Shares rose $2.06, or 2.2 percent, to $94.42 in afternoon trading, even though its forecast for the current quarter, which includes the critical holiday season, falls short of Wall Street expectations.

Verbal Abuse & Advice + Abusive Relationship Talk Show ... - Abiola

Let?s talk about partner violence ? this piece is primarily about verbal abuse but can apply to uninvited physical abuse as well. It originally appeared on my Yahoo Shine column <here.> The video is a recent appearance on ?The Bill Cunningham Show? on the CW Network where I am a resident life coach and relationship expert. -aa

Whether you call it domestic violence, intimate partner violence, spousal abuse, teen dating violence or family violence, this is a serious matter. We are clear that if someone has physically hit us that we are being abused but there are more insidious ways that abusers strike.?Please note: I am using the pronoun he to refer to the abuser but abusers can be any gender in relationships of any orientation.

Here are 4 signs that you are in an abusive relationship:

1. You walk on eggshells around him.

When he is ?in a mood? you are practically tiptoeing around him because you know that any little comment can send him over the edge. On the last season of the ABC reality series ?The Bachelor,? the winner Emily said that Brad?s family asked her whether she had ?poked the bear yet.? This was their pet name for Brad?s angry rages. At that moment I was thinking, girl, you need to run.

When you have to be on tenterhooks around someone for fear or enraging them or setting off their temper you may be in an abusive relationship.

2. You make excuses to your friends and family about him.

That?s just Tony. He has anger issues. His mother was really mean. He had a rough upbringing. His father abused him.?While these excuses may be good reasons for therapy, they are terrible reasons for a jerk being a jerk.

We all may need our friends to give us a temper tantrum pass from time to time, but if this is the norm in your relationship then something is wrong. If you feel that you always have to explain your man?s behavior to yourself or others, this is a problem.

If you must justify why your man is treating you poorly then you may be in an abusive relationship.

3. He belittles you.

Verbal abuse is never acceptable; but what constitutes verbal abuse? Please take note. Anyone telling you that you are dumb or stupid is verbal abusive. A loved one making repeated disparaging remarks or ?jokes? about your looks or physical appearance is verbal abuse. Many abusers do this under the guise of constructive criticism but there is nothing constructive about repeated comments that make you feel small. If some dude is taking repeated verbal jabs at you, no matter how small, you may be in an abusive relationship.

The first comment may take your breath away. You aren?t even sure if the person is being purposely offensive or just rude. The next comment feels like a slap in the face. Starting to see a pattern?

4. He is extremely jealous.

Jealousy can seduce us with the feeling that someone cares about us. However, if your partner sees your every interaction as a flirtation or every glance as a potential affair there is a problem. He is clearly projecting his insecurities on to you.

It is not your responsibility to manage someone else?s insecurity no matter how much you love him. If you are a consenting adult no one should be monitoring your comings and goings. If your partner is consistently jealous and afraid of you cheating on him then you may be in an abusive relationship.

?

What now?

What if you have determined that you are in an abusive situation??Get help. You are not alone. According to the?Center for Disease Control?25 million American Women share your plight. If the situation has already escalated into physical violence the Domestic Violence Hotline is (800) 799-SAFE and there is advice for making a detailed escape plan on?their comprehensive website?.

Stop casting your gorgeous pearls to the swine, dahling. It?s time to move on. You can?t fix anyone and the reasons why they became that way are not your responsibility. Jealousy and possessiveness may feel like love but this is the trickster?s confusion. No one who attempts to make you feel as though you are less than your glorious self deserves a front seat in your big, fat, beautiful life. Many people in this situation move on and do all sorts of exciting things ? enter a helping healing profession or tell your story.

?

Put on your running shoes and go!

More Juicy Goodness!

Microsoft working with US military to create Kinect-powered physical therapy system

If all goes as planned, Microsoft's Kinect motion sensor camera will be used to help provide physical therapy for injured soldiers and veterans. According to Defense News, the company is working with the Air Force and the Army?s Communications-Electronics Research, Development, and Engineering Center to create a therapy system that utilizes the camera, a standard PC, and off-the-shelf software. Kinect offers an extremely affordable and effective tool for tracking body movements, and therapy software, such as ReMotion360, is already being used for physical rehabilitation.

Due to the low cost of the device ? Kinect for Windows can be purchased for $249.99 ? and the minimal upkeep involved with the setup, the program would allow those who are not located near a Veterans Affairs facility to easily take advantage of its benefits. Additionally, having the program accessible remotely will lower the costs involved with maintaining medical facilities. Other military bodies, such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Navy?s Bureau of Medicine, have also expressed interest in the program. Beyond physical therapy, Kinect may eventually be used for training and simulation purposes, as well as treating post-traumatic stress disorder through group sessions.

Botany experiment will try out zero gravity aboard space station

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Gravity: It's the law in these parts. But to reach the stars, humans may have to learn to live outside the law.

"Gravity is the most pervasive thing on the planet, and it's always been there," says Simon Gilroy, University of Wisconsin-Madison botany professor. "Terrestrial biology has evolved with this constant force in the background, and when you remove it, things start to happen that you wouldn't necessarily think of."

Surprises are not welcome in space, especially surprises that interrupt the supply of vital oxygen, water and food.

For travel beyond a narrow envelope around Earth, the connection to those supplies is -- for all intents and purposes -- severed. It just takes too many resources to deliver supplementary meals and air as astronauts stray farther and farther from home.

"The only life support system we know that works really, really well is the Earth's, and that is built around plants and microbes," Gilroy says. "It's not 100 percent clear it will work, but the long-term goal is to integrate those tools into space missions: plants to grow your food and purify the air and water; microbes as the waste-processing system."

In March, Gilroy hopes to contribute a small piece of the knowledge that may support such a life-sustaining system by sending a canister full of plants to the International Space Station. Both engineered mutant and unadulterated versions of Arabidopsis -- known commonly as mouse-eared cress, and to researchers as "the lab rat of plant biology," says Gilroy -- will make the trip to study the effect of low-oxygen conditions on the plants' genes.

Without the pull of gravity, plant roots are going to have the same problem that makes a lava lamp a lot less fun in space.

"The reason is buoyancy," Gilroy says. "The goopy stuff in a lava lamp heats up, expands and gets less dense. Buoyancy moves it up in the lamp, where it cools down and sinks. And it all starts over."

Buoyancy depends on relative differences in volume and weight, and is driven by gravity. Without buoyancy, there's no convection, and on Earth convection helps mix gases in the atmosphere.

"If you were just lying on your back in the International Space Station, the gases that you're breathing out -- if there [were] no other things like fans to move the air -- would just sit there around your head," Gilroy says. "You would suffocate, because there's no mixing to replace the oxygen you use up."

Plant roots use oxygen, too. They burn it along with glucose to make energy to drive a growing plant. But the little bit of convection-driven gas mixing plants count on in Earth's soil doesn't happen in space, and the available oxygen gets used up.

For a plant, this low oxygen level is akin to what happens when a neighboring river spills its banks. Corn in a flooded field can survive a few days, but eventually the water will replace air pockets in the soil.

"Just like humans, plants suffocate and die," Gilroy says. "Plants can grow in space, but it may be that they don't grow very well. And one of the reasons is trying to cope with this oxygen depletion."

Gilroy's lab studies the way plants deal with stress, including the signals plant cells pass to one another in times of trouble -- like during a flood.

"If I flood a plant, within seconds, cells in that plant will be sending signals to other cells all over, saying, 'We need to get our act together to deal with this,'" Gilroy says.

Gilroy's lab will send Arabidopsis seeds to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule scheduled to launch in March. The seeds will germinate in space in a small container called Biological Research in a Canister (BRIC). After eight days of growth in a gravity-free environment, astronauts will stop the plants' development with a dose of a chemical fixative and tuck the whole BRIC in a deep freeze.

The entire frozen BRIC will return on the same Dragon craft it rode up, and be turned over whole to Gilroy -- who will then treat it like his firstborn child.

"As everyone who has done space shots has told us: you will never let those samples out of your sight once they're back," says Gilroy, whose experiment is funded by NASA. "They're just too valuable."

Arabidopsis grown in a NASA lab that simulates space station conditions (aside from lack of gravity) will be compared to the space plants for physical and genetic differences.

"We should be able to say this is the fingerprint of what low-oxygen looks like," Gilroy says. "We'll be able to say these plants in space look like the plants that were grown on the ground in this particular low oxygen concentration."

That will contribute to the understanding of long-term plant growth in space, and put future space travelers a hair closer to the company of plant life.

"This is that bit of the science where we're beginning to tease apart the system, beginning to understand the components that we can put together to great use," Gilroy says.

Volunteers Could Salvage High School Sports

12/18/2012

The Thames Valley School Board is assessing the future of high school sports in the new year as a dispute between the McGuinty government and Ontario's teachers continues to drag on.

The school board is conducting a survey of local high schools to determine the effect of continued teacher job action when it comes to extra-curricular activities, including sports.

"If teachers continue to withdraw voluntary and extra-curricular duties, some schools may decide to field teams with volunteer coaches," said Laura Elliot, Executive Superintendant of Program Services.

The board is hopeful enough retired teachers or other non-working teachers step forward to allow sports to resume in 2013.

Although teams may be fielded with the assistance of additional volunteers, each team requires a volunteer 'coach liaison', according to provincial guidelines.

A coach liaison must have a teaching certificate in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers, such as a retired teacher or a teacher not currently under contract.

Prospective volunteer coaches can contact the school principal and complete an application process, including a mandatory police check.

"Continuing the season without our teachers is not our preferred option," said Elliot.? "We recognize the importance our teachers play as coaches and educators - in the classroom and on the playing field."

But the head of the OSSTF in London, Colleen Canon, isn't impressed with the idea.

"We would hope that our retired teachers or those trying to get into the profession wouldn't go down that path and step into these roles.? It could become very divisive," Canon said.

TVDSB placed a pause on all high school sports earlier this month when members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation withdrew from all voluntary and extra-curricular activities.

Black Friday: Think it's crazy in the US? You should see China's version.

China doesn't officially celebrate Black Friday, but Nov. 11 has become the biggest shopping day on the Chinese calendar. E-commerce sales alone reached $4.6 billion this year.?

They don?t celebrate Thanksgiving Day here, of course, but Nov. 11, has become the biggest shopping day on the Chinese calendar.

That?s because it is known as ?Singles Day? (11.11 ? geddit?) ? a type of Valentine?s Day for those without lovers, but with friends to whom they give gifts.

Online stores have cashed in on the idea, offering mouthwatering discounts on everything from cars to clothes to tempt consumers online on Singles Day, turning it into a retail bonanza? and it works.?

?I hadn?t planned to buy anything but I heard there would be great discounts so I went online to have a look,? says Liu Na, a 20-something book editor. ?I bought a blouse and a bag for myself, at 50 percent off.?

This year, e-commerce sales on Nov. 11 reached $4.6 billion, according to an estimate by the Economic Herald, a specialist daily in Shandong province.

That may not look like much compared with ?Black Friday? spending in the US (which topped $11.4 billion last year), until you take a couple of things into account:?

First, average Chinese salaries are 10 times smaller than average American salaries.

Second, this is just online. A comparable day in America might be ?Cyber Monday,? coming up after the weekend. Last year online US shoppers shelled out $1.25 billion ? little more than a quarter of what their Chinese counterparts spent two weeks ago.

The Chinese government may not be keen on the political corners of the Internet, but it loves the commercial aspect; its current five year plan for the economy foresees a fourfold jump in e-commerce?from 2010 levels to $2.9 trillion by 2015.

China has the world?s largest online population, at 538 million, and has more online shoppers than anywhere else too: On Nov. 11, some 213 million people ? nearly half of all Chinese Internet users ? visited one of Alibaba?s two retail platforms. Alibaba, which runs the two biggest e-commerce sites in China, reported sales of $2.94 billion on Nov.11.

Ten million consumers ? more than the population of Greece ? clicked on an Alibaba site in the first minute of Nov. 11, in the dead of night.

The massive Singles Day sales promotions are expected to boost the number of online shoppers even further. Ms. Liu for example, says she has normally shopped in bricks-and-mortar stores, but her Singles Day experience has converted her.

??Apart from the discounts, it?s a lot more convenient,? she says.

Russia backtracks on statement about Assad's fall

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's attempt to backpedal after a top diplomat said Syrian President Bashar Assad is losing control of his country reflects the dilemma Moscow faces as opposition fighters gain ground.

Throughout the Syrian crisis, Russia has tried to walk a fine line ? eschewing statements of outright support for Assad while blocking international attempts either to pressure him to stop the fighting or to leave power altogether.

Instead, Russia has insisted that negotiations are the only way to resolve the crisis and has portrayed itself as a principled opponent of foreign intervention.

The strategy, however, has led some to view Moscow's stance as a disingenuous attempt to prop up a dictator in a country where activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

As the fighting in Syria intensified over recent months, Russian officials have held back from public assessments of whether Assad's regime would survive. But on Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted by major Russian news agencies as saying "there is a trend for the government to progressively lose control over an increasing part of the territory" and "an opposition victory can't be excluded."

On Friday, the Foreign Ministry issued a convoluted denial, saying its top envoy for Syria was merely characterizing the opinion of the Syrian opposition rather than stating Russia's view.

"In that context, Bogdanov again confirmed Russia's principled stance that a political settlement in Syria has no alternative," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

While Bogdanov's statement seemed to signal Russia's attempt to begin positioning itself for Assad's eventual defeat, the Foreign Ministry's backtracking clearly indicated that Moscow has no intention yet of pulling away from its Mideast ally.

This was reinforced by Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil, who was in Moscow on Friday to meet with Bogdanov and his boss, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"There have been no changes in Russia's position," Jamil told journalists after the meeting. "Russia stands for dialogue and against foreign interference."

Facing further questions Friday about Bogdanov's statement, Lukashevich insisted there had been no shift in the Russian position on Syria. He said Moscow is continuing to call for a political dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition on the basis of the peace plan agreed upon at an international conference in June.

"Our only goal is to end the violence in Syria as quickly as possible, start a dialogue between the Syrians, between the government and the opposition, and work out a formula for advancing a political process," Lukashevich said. "There hasn't been and there won't be any retraction from our principled line on the Syrian affairs."

Georgy Mirsky, a leading Mideast expert with the Institute for World Economy and International Relations, a top foreign policy think tank supported by the Russian government, said Bogdanov may have slipped up.

"Bogdanov went very far, and the question is whether he coordinated his statement with Lavrov," the analyst said. "If he didn't, he may have gotten himself in trouble."

Mirsky said it would be difficult for Russian President Vladimir Putin to dump Assad.

"It would amount to a loss of face, look like caving in to Western pressure. That's not in his character," Mirsky said. "Russia is going to lose Syria anyway. But if it's lost as a result of Assad's ouster or killing or a coup by his own men, it wouldn't look like Putin's defeat. But he would look very bad indeed if even he doesn't wait for Bashar Assad to go away."

The U.S. quickly commended Russia on Thursday for "waking up to the reality" by acknowledging the Syrian regime's impending fall, but Lukashevich lashed back, saying that "we haven't fallen asleep."

"We haven't changed our position and we won't," he said.

Russia maintains a naval base at the Syrian port of Tartus, the only such outpost outside the ex-Soviet Union serving Russian navy ships in the Mediterranean and hosting an unspecified number of military personnel. Russia also has an unspecified number of military advisers teaching Syrians how to use Russian weapons, which make up the bulk of Syria's arsenals.

Syria is Russia's last remaining ally in the Middle East and has been a major customer of Soviet and Russian weapons industries for the last four decades, acquiring billions of dollars' worth of combat jets, helicopters, missiles, armored vehicles and other military gear.

Russia has joined with China at the U.N. Security Council to veto three resolutions that would have imposed sanctions on Assad's regime over its bloody crackdown on the uprising that began in March 2011. Moscow also has continued to provide the Syrian government with weapons despite strong international protests.

Asked if Beijing also foresees Assad's demise and whether it plans to evacuate its citizens in Syria, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said it would take unspecified steps to protect Chinese nationals and appealed anew for a cease-fire and for a negotiated political transition.

"China is deeply worried about the continuing violent conflict in Syria and always believes that a diplomatic settlement to the Syrian issue is the only way out and also serves the shared interest of the international community," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily media briefing.

On Friday, the Pentagon announced it will send two batteries of Patriot missiles and 400 troops to Turkey as part of a NATO force to protect Turkish territory from potential Syrian missile attacks.

Spike in crime for Benton County | Local & Regional | KEPR CBS 19 ...

BENTON COUNTY - The KEPR Crime Tracker is learning of an outbreak of car prowls -- mailbox thefts -- and home burglaries. Thieves are hot on the trail of your Christmas presents.

Corky is just like any grandma. Carefully crafting presents -- ready to ship in the mail.
Her only worry? Thieves.

"Yeah, I worry about that immensely," said Finley Resident Corky.

Corky's trailer park in Finley was recently hit by a series of mailbox thefts.

"It's extremely frustrating," exclaimed Corky.

Her situation is not isolated -- Benton County is reporting a handful of problem spots for theft -- car prowls and burglaries.

They include Paul's Trailer Court and Kelly Estates in Finley. Also the west end of Benton County -- along King Tull Road and West Hanks. And a pock of Benton County in unincorporated Kennewick -- near Arrowhead and Jefferson. Car prowlers have targeted that area near Canal Drive in recent weeks.

"Whatever present you just bought for your mom is going to someone else's mom," said Benton County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Lusignan.

It reflects a bigger trend. Crime in Benton County is down compared to the five year average. However, theft from vehicles, thefts and residential burglaries are all close to matching last year's numbers.

"This time of the year, these things start to trend upwards," explained Lusignan.

The Sheriff's department says it's increasing patrols and trying to boost awareness. But community action goes a long ways. It's all about simply locking-up.

"They'll take advantage of those of us in our society who are a little bit too trusting," said Lusignan.

So far no arrests have been made in connection to these. To avoid becoming a victim -- always park in a well-lit area -- and don't put the red flag up on your mailbox if you put cards or checks inside.

Putin slams U.S. rights bill but urges measured response

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday U.S. legislation to punish Russian violators of human rights would hurt relations with Washington, but called for a measured response.

"This is a purely political and unfriendly act," he said. "I don't get why they would sacrifice U.S.-Russia relations in order to reap some political dividends at home."

The U.S. Senate last week adopted legislation requiring the United States to deny visas and freeze assets of people involved in the prison death of Russian anti-graft lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and other alleged rights violators.

President Barack Obama is expected to sign it into law soon.

Putin warned the Magnitsky Act would further strain a relationship tested by the conflict in Syria and the treatment of critics of the Kremlin since his return to the presidency in May.

"Why do they need this? They talk about a 'reset' when they themselves make the situation worse," Putin said, referring to Obama's efforts in his first term to improve relations.

TIT FOR TAT

He voiced support for a retaliatory bill to be debated on Friday in Russia's lower house, the State Duma. It would bar entry to Americans deemed to have violated the rights of Russian citizens abroad.

"I think this is absolutely right that the State Duma rolled out this initiative," he said. "We need to make sure though that the decisions we take are adequate and not excessive."

Russia has said it could take unspecified measures in addition to the bill, but denies any connection between the Magnitsky Act and its announcement on Friday of restrictions on meat imports from several countries including the United States.

Pro-Kremlin deputies said the bill, to be debated in the first of three readings on Friday, may be named after Dima Yakovlev, an 18-month Russian infant who died after his adoptive U.S. family left him locked in a vehicle in Virginia in 2008.

Putin criticized U.S. authorities for their handling of cases involving violence against adopted Russian children.

He also pointed to secret CIA jails abroad and treatment of inmates in the Guantanamo Bay facility in Cuba, saying Washington had no right to take the moral high ground.

"For eight years now they have failed to shut down Guantanamo, (where) they extrajudicially hold people in irons, like in the Middle Ages," he said.

"United States set up secret prisons, legalized torture during investigation. And these people are pointing at our faults!"
