Pets.com and Midwestern moms: Another look at what happened to ...

Hoo boy, anything tech-related that happened over this past week was dwarfed into oblivion by Facebook?s IPO.

Many of us were expecting a glorious event with massive profits for early shareholders, but the day?s events ended in disappointment.

The stock closed at just over $38 ? exactly Facebook?s original offering price. In fact, NASDAQ revealed that the deal?s underwriters had to make supporting bids to keep the price from dipping below the $38 mark.

Also, unexpectedly low figures for Facebook?s share price led to a price slump for other tech stocks, as well. Zynga had a NASDAQ-mandated halt in trading not once but twice during the day when it fell by more than 10 percent.

?Ouch? doesn?t begin to cover it.

Still, there?s hope. We?re just at the beginning, and the mainstream market?s lack of faith in Facebook doesn?t necessarily mean that we?re heading for another dotcom-esque bust. My mom said so.

G8, raising pressure on Iran, puts oil stocks on standby

CAMP DAVID, Maryland (Reuters) - Leaders of the Group of Eight major economies raised the pressure on Iran on Saturday, signaling their readiness to tap into emergency oil stockpiles quickly this summer if tougher new sanctions on Tehran threaten to strain supplies.

"We remain united in our grave concern over Iran's nuclear program," the G8 leaders said in a statement summing up the results of their meeting in Camp David in rural Maryland.

In unusually blunt language, the G8 put the International Energy Agency -- the West's energy adviser responsible for coordinating reserves -- on standby for action.

It was the clearest sign yet that U.S. President Barack Obama is winning support for tapping government-held oil stocks for the second time in two years.

"Looking ahead to the likelihood of further disruptions in oil sales and the expected increased demand over the coming months, we are monitoring the situation closely and stand ready to call upon the International Energy Agency to take appropriate action to ensure that the market is fully and timely supplied," the G8 said in separate statement earlier on Saturday.

The meeting came just days before the next round of Iran talks, to be held in Baghdad. Western countries suspect Iran's nuclear program is aimed at making a nuclear bomb, a charge Tehran denies. The U.N. nuclear chief is also due to fly to Tehran on Sunday in an apparent bid to secure a deal enabling his inspectors to probe suspicions of atomic bomb research.

"All of us are firmly committed to continuing with the approach of sanctions and pressure in combination with diplomatic discussions," Obama told reporters.

"And our hope is that we can resolve this issue in a peaceful fashion that respects Iran's sovereignty and its rights in the international community, but also recognizes its responsibilities," he said.

STRATEGIC RESERVES

Although it made no explicit mention of oil reserves, the message was unmistakable. "That's what the IEA does ... it coordinates the release of strategic reserves," Michael Froman, a senior White House aide, told reporters.

Speculation had been growing that Obama would use an energy session at the G8 to seek support to tap emergency oil reserves before a European Union embargo of Iranian crude takes effect in July and tough new U.S. sanctions come into force in late June. Exports have already fallen by more than a fifth this year.

The meeting also showed that this month's slump in oil prices has not deterred Obama from moving toward tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) again - an unprecedented second release for a U.S. president. That could expose him to criticism from Republicans that he is using a national security tool to win votes this November.

"The word 'likely' signals further disruptions in oil markets don't need to be earth-shattering to potentially prompt action" to tap oil reserves, said Michael Levi, an energy policy fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Froman said although oil prices have been declining in recent weeks, they remain high. He said the G8 did not discuss any specific trigger that would prompt action.

"It's an important statement to the market, to consumers, to producers, to the Iranians that the G8... has a common position, that they are ready to act, and to act through the IEA, to ensure that the market is fully... supplied as these sanctions go fully into effect," he said.

SPARE CAPACITY 'PRUDENTLY' DIMINISHED

The statement also made an indirect reference to concerns that big producers -- principally Saudi Arabia -- may be running short of extra capacity to boost output further, more reason to ready emergency stocks.

Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi says the kingdom is pumping around 10 million barrels per day (bpd), leaving it another 2.5 million bpd in reserve. But some analysts fear it could not sustain output at that peak level.

"There have been increasing disruptions in the supply of oil to the global market over the past several months, which pose a substantial risk to global economic growth," the statement said.

"In response, major producers have increased their output while drawing prudently on excess capacity."

Saudi officials have highlighted the 80 million barrels they are storing at home and abroad to assure consumer nations that they can keep the world supplied with crude without the need to tap into emergency stocks.

Tapping the reserves is not a foregone conclusion. It is unclear yet whether Obama and allies would opt to wait and see if Iran's exports fall and prices spike, or move preemptively to head off a speculative panic that could drive U.S. gasoline quickly above $4 a gallon.

U.S. crude oil has tumbled 12 percent this month, dropping to the lowest point since before a November U.N. report on Iran's atomic program which kindled global fears.

Iran and the world powers involved in nuclear diplomacy - the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - revived negotiations in Istanbul last month after a 15-month hiatus during which the West sharpened sanctions to an unprecedented degree, targeting Iran's oil trade and banks.

The resumption of diplomacy offers a chance to defuse that tension as well as worries about a new Middle East war. Their next meeting will take place in the Iraqi capital on May 23.

"We call on Iran to seize the opportunity that began in Istanbul, and sustain this opening in Baghdad by engaging in detailed discussions about near-term, concrete steps that can, through a step-by-step approach based on reciprocity, lead towards a comprehensive negotiated solution which restores international confidence that Iran's nuclear program is exclusively peaceful," the G8 statement said.

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile hits FCC, brings future-proofed HSPA+ for good measure

Image

There's been hints of it coming as early as February, but we now have a smoking gun at the FCC: the Galaxy S III is coming to T-Mobile. A Samsung SGH-T999 has popped up at the agency sporting newly added 1,700MHz AWS support that's the telltale sign of a T-Mobile device, along with the T999 name itself (the T989 is the network's Galaxy S II). It also totes 850MHz and 1,900MHz WCDMA bands being used for HSPA+ data rather than just voice, a clue that the phone is ready for refarmed GSM spectrum. Just in case there was any remaining doubt, we've further spotted a related T999V entry at the Bluetooth SIG with a rather familiar-looking image as well as a Samsung-hosted T999 user agent profile on the web that matches what we know about the Android 4.0 hardware. We have yet to get a look at whether or not the T-Mobile version is any different on the outside, but with the FCC's help, there's not much left to know before the expected summer US launch.

House passes Violence Against Women Act, grudgingly

The Violence Against Women Act breezed through the Congress in previous years, but it's suddenly a heavy lift. The GOP House passed its version of the bill on a largely party-line vote, but getting to yes with the Senate will be tough.

Rep. Gwen Moore (D) of Wisconsin recounts her own history of being sexually assaulted as a child, then raped as a young woman, at a press conference on Capitol Hill to push for an unrestricted reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act on May 16.

VAWA, passing 222-205 with 23 Republicans in opposition and six Democrats in favor, will now join another once-uncontroversial measure ? the transportation bill ? in a conference committee between the two chambers.

The act provides some $660 million in funding over five years for programs ranging from protecting victims of domestic violence and community violence prevention to legal aid for survivors of violence.? Historically a light political lift, VAWA breezed through Congress in its two prior reauthorizations.

RECOMMENDED: Top 9 reasons Congress is broken

But just like the 2012 transportation bill, a bipartisan measure passed first in the Senate was initially blocked by House Republican leaders ? and bitter partisan rancor followed.

Democrats said the GOP?s bill ? which removed Senate-passed provisions relating to extending protections to Native Americans, lesbian, gay, and transgender Americans and illegal immigrants ? showed a shocking lack of concern on the part of House Republicans.

?The indifference in this bill toward some, just some, is as chilling and callous as anything I have seen come before this Congress in modern times,? said Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D) of New York at a press conference Wednesday. ?Do they not bleed, and bruise, and are injured just as much as anyone else??

Republicans accused Democrats of using the bill to back their claim that Republicans were waging a ?war on women.?

?Can we stop the election-year gimmicks? Can we stop these manufactured wars that pit one group of Americans against another group of Americans?? thundered freshman Rep. Trey Gowdy (R) of South Carolina on the House floor Wednesday.

The White House, for its part, supports the Senate measure and said it would veto the House bill because the measure ?rolls back existing law and removes long-standing protections for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault ? crimes that predominantly affect women.?

The House and Senate versions of VAWA have several key differences:

  • The Senate adds language that explicitly mentions gay and transgender Americans for protection, while the House version is gender neutral. Republicans contend that their measure allows all Americans to receive protection because it does not specify who qualifies for various programs. Democrats, however, say that local law enforcement could use the lack of specificity to discriminate against gay or transgender people.
  • ?The House bill does not include a Senate provision that would allow Native American women to take American citizens who abuse them to court within the tribal legal system. Republicans say that the Senate measure is unconstitutional and replace it with a proposal that allows Native American women to apply for protection orders from local US courts. Democrats contend that without the Senate?s proposals, Native American women abused on an Indian reservation are often left without legal recourse.?
  • The House bill does not allow for a path to citizenship for illegal women who have been abused?and agree to cooperate with the police investigation of the crime. Moreover, it holds the cap on temporary visas offered to women cooperating in legal investigations to 10,000, below the Senate?s increased 15,000 level. Republicans say the citizenship provision is akin to amnesty for illegal immigrants. Democrats, on the other hand, say that women fearing deportation may never come forward to take abusers off the street under the House bill.

Perhaps emblematic of the highly partisan atmosphere around a bill that once enjoyed widespread agreement are freshman Rep. Sandy Adams (R) of Florida and Rep. Gwen Moore (D) of Wisconsin. Congresswoman Adams, the GOP bill?s sponsor, and Congresswoman Moore, who sponsored the House version of the Senate legislation, have heart-wrenching stories of their own experience with domestic violence and sexual assault, respectively. And both said the bill should not be subject to partisan political concerns.?

?So had the two women ever crossed the aisle to speak about ?the bill?
?
?No,? Moore said.

After the vote, however, the two women embraced on the House floor.

Next, House and Senate negotiators must find a way to embrace a common version of the bill that can pass both the House and Senate.

CIENCIASMEDICASNEWS: Physical fitness may reduce ...

Physical fitness may reduce hypertension risk in people with family history / American Heart Association

Study Highlights:

  • If your parents have high blood pressure, you can significantly lower your risk of developing the disease with moderate exercise and increased cardiovascular fitness.
  • People with low fitness levels and hypertensive parents have a significantly higher risk for developing the disease.

EMBARGOED UNTIL 3 pm CT/4 pm ET, Monday, May 14, 2012

?

In a study of more than 6,000 people, those who had a parent with high blood pressure but were highly fit had a 34 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure themselves, compared to those with a low-fitness level who had the same parental history.

?

?Understanding the roles that family history and fitness play in chronic diseases is critically important,? said Robin P. Shook, M.S., study lead author and a doctoral graduate student in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. ?The results of this study send a very practical message, which is that even a very realistic, moderate amount of exercise ? which we define as brisk walking for 150 minutes per week ? can provide a huge health benefit, particularly to people predisposed to hypertension because of their family history.?

?

Previous research indicates that parental history accounts for about 35 percent to 65 percent of the variability in blood pressure among offspring, with varying levels of risk based on which parent developed it and the age of onset.

?

Researchers followed a group of 6,278 predominantly Caucasian adults 20- to 80-years-old for an average 4.7 years. The participants were patients of the Cooper Clinic, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventive medicine, research and education in Dallas. Thirty-three percent of participants reported that a parent had hypertension.

?

When the study began, all participants were healthy, reported no physician diagnosis of hypertension, and achieved an exercise test score of at least 85 percent of their age-predicted maximal heart rate. Researchers determined participants? cardiorespiratory fitness using a maximal treadmill exercise test.

?

During the study, 1,545 participants reported they had developed hypertension.

Researchers found that:

  • Combining those with and without a family history of high blood pressure, high levels of fitness were associated with a 42 percent lower risk of developing hypertension, and moderate levels of fitness with a 26 percent lower risk.
  • People with both a low level of fitness and a parent with hypertension had a 70 percent higher risk for developing hypertension compared with highly fit people with no parental history.
  • Those with a high level of fitness and a parent with hypertension experienced only a 16 percent higher risk of developing hypertension compared to those who were fit and had no parental history.

?The correlation between fitness levels, parental history and risk are impossible to ignore,? Shook said. ?This awareness can serve the clinician and the patient, as they work together to find effective and reasonable ways to avoid the diseases that have affected their family members ? in some cases, for generations.?

?

The research findings may not apply to all people because the majority of the study participants were relatively fit, well-educated, middle to upper class white men.

?

The findings support the American Heart Association?s recommendations of moderately intense physical activity, such as brisk walking, for 30 minutes or longer at least five days a week.

?

The National Institutes of Health and an unrestricted research grant from The Coca-Cola Company funded the study.

from our front porch lookin' in...: Homeschooling Through Vision ...

I started homeschooling when my oldest, Sammi, was 5 and ready for Kindergarten. That was back in 2007. She was the only person in my life that I'd ever attempted to teach to read.

It did not go well.

My first assumption, of course, was that I was just incapable of teaching reading.

Progress would come... but it was painfully slow. None of concepts tied to reading were "clicking" for her. And we tried everything.

Since then, I've briefly alluded to Sam's issues. Ultimately, I heeded the advice of several older & wiser homeschooling mothers, who told me to take a step back... to give Sam breathing room and to avoid pressuring her to meet my schedule?of reading development.

Sammi is so bright! She is creative, crafty, and has a working vocabulary that is about a grade level or two above her current grade. Her memorization ability is also quite good, so the continued slow progress through learning to read just confounded me.

In November of 2010, I got the chance to attend a talk entitled?"A Critical Link Between Vision and Learning" by Dr. Genia Beasley, at our local homeschool group's Parent Workshop. It didn't take long before the handouts she gave us during that meeting had the hair standing up on the back of my neck. Of the twenty-four symptoms listed as signals for a visual processing disorder, I checked off nineteen of them as fitting Sam. After meeting with Dr. Beasley, it become clear that Sammi was indeed a good candidate for further testing and most likely some form of vision therapy.

The bad news was... none of it would be covered by our insurance(s). Neither our vision insurance nor our medical insurance.

For us, at the time, that was that. We just did not have room in the budget for something like this. So I buckled down, did my research... learned what
we?could do to help improve her vision and we set out on a path for the rest of that school year with deeper understanding of what Sammi was dealing with and how we could help?accommodate?her. Her reading continually improved and even began improving at a faster and faster pace, which was extremely encouraging to us.

Then came this year.

And while her reading was still steadily improving... {
and?she was falling in love with books!} we hit a whole new brick wall: Math.

I never even saw it coming. Granted, she had struggled a little with adding and subtracting three digit numbers... but when we attempted to toss in multiplication and division, all bets were off. When I was checking her work, it was clear that she was understanding the
concepts?of multiplication, but it was almost like she could tell which problems were to be added and which were to be multiplied!

Of course, because I was now aware of the potential visual processing deficiency that she was working with, that was the first thing that came to mind. Not knowing what else to do, we just quit trying to move forward in math. In the meantime, we switched from Singapore Math to Math-U-See {at the suggesting of some more very helpful homeschooling friends working through similar issues...} and began making more concrete plans to get Sam evaluated and treated, regardless of the cost. {Of course, it helps that we've also recently paid off some previously binding medical debt.}?

Today is Step 1. Sammi is going in this morning for an exam with my eye doctor, who
is?covered on our vision insurance and we are praying {and wouldn't mind others praying with us!} for answers or at the very least... direction.

In the meantime, I plan to blog about this because a) it's completely foreign to me and blogging it all out helps my mind to cope with the details of it all and b) because if I had to venture a guess, I'd say that there just might be someone out there experiencing similar issues with their child and something that I write might just be the very thing they need to read at the moment they happen upon us here. A least that is my hope.?

North Korea Continues To Jam Civilian GPS Signals To Incheon ...

If Al Qaeda was doing this it would be considered terrorism but since it is North Korea no one cares and the ROK government is left to deal with it:

North Korea has continued to jam satellite signals to try to disrupt air and maritime traffic navigation systems in South Korea, a government official said Sunday, in defiance of Seoul?s warning to take the issue to a U.N. communications agency.

The North?s global positioning system (GPS) jamming signals originating from its western border city of Kaesong since April 28 have not caused damage to airplane flights or ship navigations in South Korea?s border areas, the official said. ?[Yonhap]

I think the South Koreans really should force this as a big issue with the United Nations and make nations like China on the UN Security Council that enable behavior like this to vote on sanctioning North Korea for the GPS jamming.

Bone grown from human embryonic stem cells

ScienceDaily (May 14, 2012) ? Dr. Darja Marolt, an Investigator at The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Laboratory, is lead author on a study showing that human embryonic stem cells can be used to grow bone tissue grafts for use in research and potential therapeutic application. Dr. Marolt conducted this research as a post-doctoral NYSCF -- Druckenmiller Fellow at Columbia University in the laboratory of Dr. Gordana Vunjak- Novakovic.

The study, published in the early online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences during the week of May 14th, is the first example of using bone cell progenitors derived from human embryonic stem cells to grow compact bone tissue in quantities large enough to repair centimeter-sized defects. When implanted in mice and studied over time, the implanted bone tissue supported blood vessel ingrowth, and continued development of normal bone structure, without demonstrating any incidence of tumor growth.

Dr. Marolt's work is a significant step forward in using pluripotent stem cells to repair and replace bone tissue in patients. Bone replacement therapies are relevant in treating patients with a variety of conditions, including wounded military personnel, patients with birth defects, or patients who have suffered other traumatic injury.

Since conducting this work as proof of principle at Columbia University, Dr. Marolt has continued to build upon this research as an Investigator in the NYSCF Laboratory, developing bone grafts from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. iPS cells are similar to embryonic stem cells in that they can also give rise to nearly any type of cell in the body, but iPS cells are produced from adult cells and as such are individualized to each patient. By using iPS cells rather than embryonic stem cells to engineer tissue, Dr. Marolt hopes to develop personalized bone grafts that will avoid immune rejection and other implant complications.

The New York Stem Cell Foundation has supported Dr. Marolt's research throughout her career, first through a NYSCF -- Druckenmiller Fellowship to fund her post-doctoral work at Columbia University, and now with a NYSCF -- Helmsley Investigator Award at The New

York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory. "The continuity of funding provided by NYSCF has allowed me to continue my research uninterrupted, making progress more quickly than would have otherwise been possible," Dr. Marolt said.

Japanese games cannot ignore multiplayer- Bleszinski ...

Epic Games? Cliff Bleszinski, creator of Gears of War, says Japanese games shouldn?t be ignoring multiplayer, citing games like Vanquish as an example for how lacking multiplayer can hurt their sales and reception.

?My advice to Japan is that in a disc-based market right now, you cannot [ignore multiplayer],? he said while speaking with?Gamasutra.

However, he doesn?t think they should go ahead and put a multiplayer component game into every game, even if it doesn?t fit. ?I?m not saying tack multiplayer onto every game,? he said.

He then went on to cite examples. He said about Grasshopper?s Shadows of the Damned- ?It was a beautifully crazy game with really fun gameplay, but no multiplayer co-op experience in there.

I?m not saying tack on versus; there?s a billion different ways you can do some sort of ?players interacting with other players.??

?And if you?re going to make a third-person shooter? the fact that Vanquish didn?t have a multiplayer suite was a crime,? he said about Vanquish. ?That IP, it was pretty good as far as being Western, but the gameplay was great, the vibe? and I?ve often said on record that if Gears is the kind of Wild, Wild West coal train chugging along, that Vanquish is the Japanese bullet train, with style and everything.

?And there is absolutely no reason I shouldn?t have been zipping around, doing the mega slides, diving up in the air in an arena with other players.?

He then talked about how From Software innovatively implemented multiplayer in Dark Souls, saying that it might ?inspire a lot of Western developers to figure ways that you can have connected elements in campaign games, and have more of a blended experience.?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says mobile apps the top focus, we say it's about time

Mister Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook has been making a lot of promises during a tour to drum up interest in its ever-nearing IPO, but the one gadget-heads have been wanting to hear the most, a commitment to its mobile apps, has been elusive -- until now. Everyone's favorite hooded CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is telling investors in his home 'burg of the San Francisco Bay that mobile is front and center in his company's plans. We're hoping that means new app features, although Zuck is likely referring to money-making as well: shareholders are jittery knowing that Facebook makes most of its money on web ads that it's not running on smartphones and tablets. Paid titles in App Center will go a long way towards scratching that itch, mind you. As for us, we'll just be happy if Facebook takes less than a year and a half to produce a major tablet app.
